President's Message

We just passed the autumnal equinox (I love those two words) and are barreling towards Halloween.

I’m finding acorns on the ground, and the signets in Shawme pond look near as big as their mother swan! Classes are in full swing, and for some of us, that literally means swing, as in square dancing!

Each day that I arrive on campus, I am greeted by energetic smiles and excited voices, showing the serious business of continuing education whilst socializing. I find myself taking better photos with my smart phone, dipping my toe into theatre, learning the history of my town (Sandwich) and (re) learning the evolution of our nation’s political system. So glad we have no mid-term exams!

If it seems like things are busier than usual, it’s because they are. This semester we have 450 active members, 85 of which are new. Those of you who have been around for a while may recognize a new face - please extend a greeting. We are so lucky to have this venerable institution to bring us together. And everyone, please consider to join your colleagues in our Fall Social, this October 10th, 5-7pm, at the Cape Cod Cultural Center. It’s your one chance to sample the Board of Directors’ appetizers!

I’d like to focus a little more on change, and the role of education. It seems the more I learn, the more I discover how much I do not know. So, I try to learn something new each day, and as I change, my world changes as well – the people I love and interact with are changing, as is the technology that confronts me. Grandchildren are born, my friends pass on, wars erupt, settlements are made – and all at a seemingly increasing speed. It can be unsettling.

How can we make sense of it? What is our part? I propose an answer. Although we are all individuals, we are also all connected. The more connected I become, the more stable my world becomes. How do I get more connected? By sharing. Sharing thoughts, sharing knowledge. We all have something to share.

On October 15th, while the current semester is roughly halfway through, our curriculum committee will be soliciting coordinators for spring classes. Crazy, right? But it’s the pulse of ALL that has been beating for 37 years. And so, I ask all of you. Think of what you can offer. Do you have a passion, a hobby, an acquired knowledge base that you would be will to share? I’ll continue this discussion next month. Sharing is a process.

That’s all for now!

Paul Coteus

ALL President

Update From The Special Events Committee

On September 20 at 2:00p.m. Brad Bickford, BSD, LCSW, presented a talk entitled "How to Live Healthier, Happier, and Longer in Retirement and Before" in the Lorusso Atrium.

The talk lasted about and hour and a half, with another half hour dedicated to a lively question and answer period. The event was well attended with an audience of approximately 30 people.

This very informative talk was accompanied by an excellent powerpoint presentation.

Mr. Bickford has also written a book on this topic that is available for purchase on the internet.

The Special Events Committee is currently working on scheduling additional programs. Please let us know if there are particular speakers or events you recommend we consider.

Special Events Committee Chair
