Bike Repair with the Bradford Bike Guy

Bike Repair Workshop: Tuesday, August 22 at 5pm

Simple Bike Repairs Clinic: Tuesday, August 22 from 6pm-8pm

It's a night of Bikes at the Nevins Library.

First, you are invited to a workshop with the Bradford Bike Guy: Bike Repair and Maintenance for Beginners at 5pm. You can come learn all about simple bike repair and maintenance.

Then, if you bring your bike with you, the Bike Guy will be available after his presentation until 8pm to perform simple repairs on your or your children's bikes.

Note that he does reserve the right to decline doing any repairs he considers too extensive during this clinic.

The How-Tos of Recycling

Please join us to learn all about recycling in Methuen.

Not sure what you are allowed to put into your recycle bin? Are there things that you are not putting in but should?

Joe Cosgrove, Environmental Planner for the City of Methuen, will discuss these questions as well as what happens to all of Methuen's recycling and how it benefits the community.

Support Methuen Students in Need

Once again the Nevins Library is proud to become a Food Drop Off location for the Methuen Schools’ Backpack Program.

This program sends food home with students in need to help them get through the weekend or holiday breaks when the school cafeteria is not available to provide breakfast and lunch.

There will be a basket set up on the Main Floor to accept your food donations for their food pantry starting August 1.

The best foods to donate are non-perishable, shelf-stable, and not in glass containers. Ideally, they would also fit in a large backpack with other food. We appreciate your generosity toward the students in Methuen Schools.

Friends Fundraisers & News

Order Your Fall Bulbs Now!

The Friends of the Nevins Library are bringing back their popular Flower Power fundraiser! Now through October 15 you can order your fall bulbs – giving you plenty of time to get them in the ground while the weather holds. All orders will be shipped directly to your home starting at the end of September.

Another way to support the Friends is by ordering Papa Gino’s on River Street in Haverhill for dinner on Tuesday, August 8 between 4-9pm. You won’t need to bring a flyer, but mention the Friends of the Nevins Library when you order, and a portion of your bill will be given to the Friends.

So Much More in Store in August

July was a busy month, packed full of fun programs – and we have more in store for August, including the return of Mad Science! This summer they’ll be doing a “Fire and Ice” program, which thrills audiences with impressive science experiments -- including foggy dry ice storms, mind-boggling vanishing paper, sizzling and shivering scissors, and special bubbly showers!

Other special programs cover quite a range of topics, including plant propagation, watercolor art, terrariums, polymer clay jewelry, mindfulness, and a special storytime with guest reader Shannon Mary Sunshine of Methuen – not to mention a movie sing-along at the end of the summer.

We’re also hosting the popular “Home Alone Staying Safe” course, sponsored by the Methuen Parks and Recreation Department (you’ll need to go to their website for info and to register), and we’re bringing back our bilingual storytime in partnership with the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council.

As the summer winds down and we wrap up our series of special summer programs, we’d like to celebrate with our young patrons – so be sure to bring your kids to our End-of-Summer Carnival featuring games, contests, treats, and loads of fun.

And if you have a child entering kindergarten in September, you won’t want to miss our Kickoff to Kindergarten community fair, which helps children and their families prepare for starting off in the Methuen Public Schools: hear a story, meet the superintendent, learn about local agencies and organizations, climb on a school bus, and more!

Last but not least, don’t miss our final “Little Bookworms” programs at the Nevins Farm MSPCA on August 4 and 11 – a wonderful collaboration where kids listen to stories and meet friendly animals who live at the farm.

Also, throughout August we’re still offering snazzy beads to reward kids for the reading they do this summer– don’t forget to bring your kids to the Children’s Desk to collect theirs! Of course, we’ll be holding lots of our usual programs and storytimes for babies and school-age children, as well; just keep an eye on the Youth Services calendar and Facebook page to learn the latest about upcoming events – we’d love to have you join us!

Happy August, and Happy Reading!
