WinterFEST Thank You!

This past weekend was "snow" much fun at WinterFEST! It was wonderful to see our community come together and enjoy some wintry, family-friendly fun. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! A big thank you to the Hyde Community Center, our Presenting Sponsor The Village Bank, our major sponsors, performers, volunteers, and everyone who made WinterFEST possible.

Black History Month

Newton Community Pride is excited to announce that we have partnered with several local businesses and churches to bring 5 FREE community events to the city of Newton to celebrate February's Black History Month! 

Wednesday, February 8th

Free Showing of the film TILL with Guest Speaker Harvard Law Professor Ron Sullivan, Jr.

Showcase SuperLux at The Street, 55 Boylston St, Newton

6:30 PM Doors Open at 6:00 PM

FREE showing of the film TILL with guest speaker & commentary before and after the film by Harvard law school professor, noted lecturer, speaker, and social justice advocate Attorney Ron Sullivan, Jr. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Welcome remarks prior to the movie starting at 6:30 PM. Cash bar available, free popcorn and beverage provided. TILL is the powerful and thought-provoking true story of Mamie Till-Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who was brutally lynched in Mississippi in 1955 while visiting his cousins. The film stars Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till-Bradley, with Jalyn Hall, Frankie Faison, Haley Bennett, and Whoopie Goldberg in supporting roles. This event is in partnership with Showcase SuperLux Chestnut Hill.

Jabari Asim, “A Child’s Introduction to Jazz”

A Child’s Introduction to Jazz is the delightful story of the musicians, culture, and roots of the world’s most remarkable music. Author Jabari Asim is a Professor at Emerson College and the director of the MFA Creative Writing Program, a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, and the author of several works for children. This event is in partnership with Newtonville Books.

Black Art Celebration & Community Cultural Day

Join the New Art Center to celebrate Black art! This Community Cultural Day celebrates Black History Month with art-making, snacks, and the opening of He Changed the World, an exhibition created by New Art’s Martin Luther King vacation program students in collaboration with artist Jamaal Eversley. Bring the whole family for a day of fun! This event is in partnership with the New Art Center.

An Evening of Blacknificence

First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1326 Washington Street, Newton

An exploration of the impact of music, movement, and the spoken word from black churches to broader society. Reverend Devlin Scott of the NewCity Church is the evening’s host and moderator of a panel discussion featuring Reverend Alicia Johnson of Myrtle Baptist Church and other voices from the night.

Performances include hip-hop artist Caleb McCoy, BlackOut Step Team of Tufts University, and more! The event is in partnership with the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton (FUUSN) and NewCity Church Newton.

Slam Theatre & Closing Reception for This is America

Slam Theatre produced by artist Jamaal Eversley will consist of slam poetry performances, 4-6 ten-minute plays performed and read by various actors, and dance performances. Themes of the night will touch upon American history, values, education, Afrocentricity, and other topics. Slam Theatre is a Fall 2022 Community Micro Grant recipient. 

Nancy Quint Schön Arts Scholarship

Parents, do you have a child who intends on pursuing the arts in higher education? If yes, please let them know that the Nancy Quint Schön Arts Scholarship application is open. Now in its second year, $1,000 will be awarded in May 2023 to 3 high school seniors attending Newton North, Newton South, and to a METCO student attending either NNHS or NSHS. High School applicants are encouraged to submit an essay, application, and example of their creative work to their high school guidance department by March 10, 2023.
