Dear Farm Friends,

This week’s farmer profile: Abby Nash, 30, a deeply experienced and committed farmer from Massachusetts, who started as our Harvest Manager in 2023.

How did you get into farming?

In college I started getting interested in the environment and the relationship between agriculture and climate change. I spent a summer on a farm and then I was like, well, I want to do this for a long time. So I started farming in 2014 or 2015 and I’ve been doing it ever since. I worked on smaller farms in New Hampshire and Maine and then a larger farm in Western Massachusetts. Two years ago I was looking for a change and my friend sent me your job posting. I liked that Mountain Bounty is a little smaller scale, It seemed like people stayed to work here for a long time which told me there is something good about this farm. I took a risk and moved out here, and so far, so good.

I really like the hard work and using my body and being tired at the end of the day. And in farming, I’ve found a community. I’ve really enjoyed working with people with similar values and similar outlook on life, that’s really important. And the free vegetables as well!

Tell us about your role at Mountain Bounty

My position is the harvest manager which means I watch the fields and decide what’s going to be ready to harvest that week and the next, so I can decide what’s going into the boxes. Three days a week I lead the harvest, make sure everything is picked correctly, and in a timely manner. I also support the other managers and lead the crew in other tasks when needed.

What do you see for yourself going forward?

I used to want to own a farm, but I’ve seen how it’s tricky these days trying to make it in farming. So right now I like a managing role on a farm. It challenges me enough, and I want to keep at it till I can’t do it anymore. Farming can be really hard, especially this season with being short staffed and it was over 100 degrees for the last two weeks. I’ve never experienced anything like that before. But I still like it, and there are so many good things about it.

A note about box returns!

There are a few things we ask our members to do so we can continue to reuse the boxes efficiently:

  1. Remove the fruit from your boxes immediately so the fruit does not stain the box (plus it keeps longer outside of the plastic shell).
  2. Store your Fruit Share box inside until you return it
  3. If your box is torn or stained, please do not return it and instead place it in your recycling bin. Both farms are using crew time to manage the box return program, so we'd love to only deal with boxes that can truly be reused.

Thanks for your support!
