Dear Family,

It is winter for many of us, and the cycles of darkness invite us to return-- return to the warmth of our homes and loved ones, to our goals and aspirations, and to our commitments. All of this, of course, brings us back to ourselves and to the work of liberation for all our people.

The hustle culture of white Christian Supremacy is designed to deplete us, to teach us that we are only worthy of life, love, and happiness if we are constantly earning it-- through selling our time and labor for money, doing good deeds to earn our crowns in Heaven, and taking care of everyone else while always putting ourselves dead last.

As we take this time to reflect on last season and plan for the next, let us take a breath to remember that we don't have to do anything to be worthy of abundant life. As we re-orient ourselves back to things we believe in and the people we work for, we at Soulforce remain dissuaded by the lies of white Christian Supremacy. We know the truth, we are sacred.

We find you, our Soulforce family, to be a miracle... just by your very existence. In times of doubt and turmoil, it is you, our community, that we look to for the reminders that though the road to justice is long and arduous, it is filled with the most beautiful souls and the strongest people we have ever met.

We, all of us, are the ones we have been waiting for, and we're ready to level up!

With hearts ablaze and spirits unyielding,
Rev. Alba Onofrio
Executive Director

You make it possible

Thanks to all of you for helping us raise over $14,000 on our fundraising campaign! Every single donation, every share, every testimony powers our small but mighty organization to equip LGBTQI+ activists around the world.
Café con mi Hermane

Teología Sin Vergüenza is back!!! In January, we started a new series called "Café con mi Hermane" (Coffee with my sibling) in which we interview non-women-identifying queer Latinx theologians in Instagram Live. We had some rich conversations about faith, sex, masculinity, and activism! You can check them out on our Instagram.
Roe v Wade

On January 18th our, Associate Director, Nadia Arellano joined Catholic, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Protestant faith leaders in a conversation with the media about how faith informs their work to expand reproductive health care, including abortion care. You can read the press release here and watch the video Faith Leaders Challenge the Faith and Abortion Narrative.
Team Spotlight

This month our team traveled to Washington, DC to host two workshops for Q Christian Fellowship Conference: Liberated To Love. We had important conversations on global solidarity in our Queer advocacy and the life changing work of Teología Sin Vergüenza.
Partner Spotlight

We met new friends at the Q Christian Conference earlier this month: Kaleidoscope USA is a New York based non-profit dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ people on their faith journey. Their newest programs include inclusion trainings for pastors and support to Spanish-speaking families of LGBTQI+ people from a faith perspective. Check them out here.
REAP: We will not be defeated!

We are heartbroken to announce that on January 12th, the U.S. District Court issued a terrible blow to the dignity of LGBTQIA+ students and alumni of Christian colleges in the United States when it found in favor of the schools' right to discriminate, humiliate, and traumatize our queer and trans youth.

In REAP’s class action lawsuit, Hunter, et al. vs. U.S. Dept. Of Education, the Court determined three things:

1. Student plaintiffs DID receive unequal treatment because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

2. The discrimination they endure is CAUSED BY THE RELIGIOUS EXEMPTION to Title IX as implemented by the United States federal government.

3. In spite of these truths, the Court dismissed the case. It determined that basically the Court's hands were tied by the Title IX exemption and so it could not award damages to the students and alumni for the harm they experienced.

Because of this, tens of thousands of LGBTQIA+ students across the country remain subject to discrimination at universities receiving taxpayer money. While this initial ruling is disappointing, REAP will continue the fight to bring equality to our queer and trans students, and Soulforce will do all we can to support the work of the Religious Exemption Accountability Project, and we hope you will join us.

Resistance & Resilience

D. Danyelle Thomas of Unfit Christian did an interview with Religion News Service on a topic we have discussed often here: how profane places can be sacred and how formal sacred places can be made profane. We often discuss it with our queer bars and this interview brings to light another sacred space for our most marginalized communities: the strip club as portrayed in the hit television show, P-Valley.
