ABOUT THE MICHIGAN DEC ALLIANCE

"In recognition of the harmful effects of the opioid epidemic on families and children, the Michigan State Police (MSP) Grants and Community Services Division (GCSD) applied for and received a 2019 Opioid Affected Youth Initiative (OAYI) grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Using OAYI funds, the MSP GCSD has partnered with the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children (National DEC) to establish the Michigan Alliance for Drug Endangered Children (Michigan DEC). The Michigan DEC Alliance seeks to reduce the harm experienced by youth and communities caused by caregiver opioid and substance misuse."

During this four year partnership between Michigan State Police, Michigan DEC and National DEC professionals across Michigan, representing nearly every county, have been trained by National DEC staff in DEC Awareness, DEC Approach and in January 2023 many will have the opportunity to become DEC Certified Trainers by participating in the Train-the-Trainer session.

The Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act is the most recent attempt for Congress to grant marijuana businesses access to the banking system. Passing the Act will make it easier for marijuana businesses to conduct business and exacerbate the negative consequences of marijuana proliferation, including increased traffic fatalities, youth use rates, ER visits and hospitalizations. The passage of the SAFE Banking Act will allow these operations to continue to expand.

The National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children is against the current version of the SAFE Banking Act being considered because it does not include any basic youth safeguards, such as much-needed limits around the marketing and advertising of today’s deceptive, kid-friendly, ultra-high THC products, and potencies. The high-THC industry is already commercially manufacturing, marketing, and selling high-THC vape products that are attractive to youth, kid-flavored, and easily concealable. We urge Congress to put the children first and not pass this Act in its current form.

You can lend your voice by writing to your Representatives or Senators to express your opposition to the SAFE Banking Act.
