October is Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Awareness Month

Dear Caregivers,

October is Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, SUID is the sudden and unexpected death of a baby less than one year old in which the cause was not obvious and often happens during sleep or in the infant’s sleep area. About 3,400 babies in the United States die suddenly and unexpectedly each year.

Clark County management and Clark County Family Services leadership are proud to partner with parents, relatives, and caregivers who are concerned about the lives, health, and well-being of our youngest children.  This month and every day, we encourage childcare providers to learn more about infant safe sleep practices and to follow the ABCs of Safe Sleep: Alone with no blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals; on their Back; and in a safety-approved Crib with a firm and flat sleep surface in the same room as their parent or caregiver, but not in the same bed.

For helpful information about how we can help babies sleep safer, I urge you to check out the Cribs for Kids website.

The Cribs for Kids Program in Nevada is funded by the Title V Maternal Child Health Block Grant. It targets underserved communities through an educational campaign promoting safe sleep conditions for infants. Additionally, caregivers are encouraged to attend all well-visit appointments and stay current on infant-related matters.

Thank you for always going the extra mile to care for our children, youth, and their families. We appreciate everything that you do to ensure they remain whole, supported, and successful in all aspects of their lives.

Sincerely,

Jill Marano

Next time you come into Hannah’s Closet, bring your placement letter and/or adoption decree and we’ll take it from there.

For this location, you MUST HAVE an appointment in order to shop. We DO NOT allow same day shopping or walk-ins. An appointment must be made at this link: https://app.vomo.org/opportunity/need-hannahs-closet at least 24 hours in advance.

Please also note that the caregivers must be the ones to show up and shop for their children. We do not allow Caseworkers, CASAs, etc. to shop. We implement this so that we can connect with families and try to plug them into community with other families and resources.

It can be confusing because Hannah’s Closet NORTH and SOUTH share the same name but have different rules in regards to shopping because we are run by two completely different organizations. We do apologize for that confusion, but are not in a position to change it at this point.

Important Educations Updates October 2024

You made it through the first few weeks of school! Way to go!

Thank you for all you are doing for your children.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Friday, October 11thEnd of First Quarter/First Grading Period
  • Monday, October 14thElementary School Parent-Teacher Conferences (No School for Elementary Students)
  • Friday, October 25thNevada Day Observed (No School for Students)

To plan ahead for the 2024 school year, download the 2024-25 school calendar

Check Infinite Campus/Canvas Parent Information to view your child’s First Quarter Grades

  • The First Quarter of School Ends on Friday October 11th
  • While it is semester grades that become a part of a child’s official report card or transcript, quarter grades can be a great indication of how a child is doing in school and any struggles a child may have thus far. Quarter grades/progress reports and even a teachers’ contact information will be posted on Infinite Campus and Canvas.
  • Teachers /school staff are encouraged to work with families to help children be successful in school and not fail so plans can be worked out make up missing work. As a part of the new grading policy, students will receive “0” for any missing work but CCSD is encouraging schools and teachers to accept and give credit for any missing work turned in throughout the semester no matter how late the work is turned in. Late assignments should be accepted until mid-December.
  • If your child is struggling in school as indicated by multiple failing or missing assignments or your child has unsatisfactory quarter/progress grade in a class (such as a D or an F), please reach out to your child’s Education Decision Maker and child’s teacher (elementary/middle/high school) or counselor/class teacher (middle/high school) to find out why the child is failing and how any failed or missing work can be made up. Ask which assignments are the most important or could help your child’s grade the most.
  • Ask your child’s teacher(s) why your child is struggling in that class and what help he/she might need to do better. Encourage your child to meet with the teacher and create a plan to get support.
  • At the middle and high school level, you can set up a meeting with all your child’s teachers in the morning before school to go over progress in each class via your child’s counselor. You can also ask your child’s principal/assistant principal or counselor about any intervention or academic support programs. Some schools offer pull out, small group support in academic areas, tutoring, teacher office hours, or other types of support programs on campus.
  • If you need access to Infinite Campus/Canvas, contact your child’s school for assistance or click here for instructions.

Contact Your Child’s Educational Decision Maker (EDM), Caseworker, and CAP Attorney if your Child is RPCed, Suspended or Recommended for Expulsion as Your Child May Have Special Rights in the Disciplinary Process

  • CCSD’s new discipline policy supports having less out-of-school placements (more on-campus consequences), ensuring meaningful instruction takes place if a child is out of school for discipline, and providing resources to the child and the child’s family relating to any behavior/factor that is related to the consequence. More rehabilitative and mental health related practices will be used by schools and school districts now along with consequences.
  • EDMs have a right to appeal a suspension over 3 days or a recommended expulsion. This right should be explained by an administrator when the discipline is discussed with the parent. The administrator should take note of the parent’s wanting to appeal and provide the parent with the next steps in the appeal process.
  • If your child is suspended or recommended for expulsion, your child has a special right because of being in foster care. In determining the discipline, the principal in consultation with the Foster Care Advocate and CCSD’s supposed to determine if your child poses an ongoing threat on campus and if being in foster care was a factor in the behavior relating to the incident. This usually takes place as a meeting for discussion.  The discipline may stop or change based on the determination.
  • It is very important that you contact your child’s Education Decision Maker (EDM), Caseworker, and CAP Attorney to let them know if your child was: sent home; RPCed; suspended; recommended for expulsion; and/or not given educational services. Please also ensure the EDM, Caseworker, and CAP Attorney is given any paperwork you are given and knows of any disciplinary meetings you are contacted about so they can follow up with the school. They will represent your child and ensure your child’s educational rights are being upheld.
  • It is also helpful if you can connect the school administration with the EDM, Caseworker, and CAP Attorney for your child directly.
  • If your child is being suspended or recommended for expulsion and you are concerned about the school’s decision or approach, please contact CCSD’s Foster Care Department at 702-799-1196 or fostercaretransrequest@nv.ccsd.net
  • Click here for a Guide to School Discipline for Caregivers

Contact Your Children’s School Foster Care Advocate and/or CCSD’s Foster Care Department to introduce yourself/your children and for any issues

  • School Based Foster Care Advocates (FCAs)are assigned on each school campus to help families and children involved in foster care to navigate school services. The beginning of the year is a great time to reach out to him/her, introduce yourself, and create a relationship as the FCA may be able to help you with many issues that arise over the course of the school year.  You can also share anything that works well in working with your child and helps them if they begin to struggle. Having a good relationship with your child’s school is more important than ever this school year.
  • To find out who your FCA is, ask your child’s school office or administration/principal’s office if the office doesn’t know.
  • CCSD also maintains a Foster Care Department to assist schools and help families with foster care related educational issues.   To contact CCSD’s Foster Care Department, please email fostercaretransrequest@nv.ccsd.net or call 702-799-1196.
  • For schools outside of CCSD, contact your child’s school office or principal to find out who the Foster Care Liaison is.

Fall is here and we are looking forward to welcoming local Foster and Adopted Families to Horses4Heroes' The Ranch Las Vegas. Our 2.5-acre ranch in northwest Las Vegas is open Tuesday-Saturday. We offer parents and caregivers a FREE membership in Horses4Heroes. Join today at horses4heroes.org. Membership in Horses4Heroes will make sure you always pay the lowest rate for our services and that you will receive information about FREE events, activities and giveaways. Since July, we have given away free tickets to The Sphere Experience and Las Vegas Aviators games. We also host a free event, Foster Family Farm Day, twice a year. Our next event, Saturday, Oct. 5, is sold out. We welcome teens, ages 14 and up and adults to volunteer at The Ranch. Volunteering is a great way to give back, connect with the horses and farm animals and your service looks great on a resume or application! Ask us about our newly formed Teen Leadership Advisory Board!
