Equine Vaccination Reminder

Trainers are reminded that all horses stabled at Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows must have a current Coggins test, and current vaccinations for Equine Influenza and Equine Herpes Virus (flu rhino vaccine), as well as Eastern Equine Encephalitis/Western Equine Encephalitis/ West Nile Virus (EEE/WEE/WNV), rabies and tetanus.

Horses shipping in to Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows must have an Official State Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) which has been signed and dated within five (5) days* of arrival by a licensed veterinarian.

*DUE TO ONGOING CONCERNS OVER THE EHV-1 OUTBREAK, ALL HORSES SHIPPING IN TO GULFSTREAM PARK AND PALM MEADOWS CURRENTLY ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A HEALTH CERTIFICATE WITHIN 48 HOURS OF ARRIVAL. THIS REQUIREMENT WILL BE IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

The Certificate must include the statement, "The horse(s) listed on this Official State Certificate of Veterinary Inspection have not originated from, nor been stabled on, premises which have had a Herpes Virus (EHV-1) diagnosed during the previous 30-day period." The horse must be accompanied by proof of vaccination against EHV-1 no less than 14 days and no more than 90 days prior to entry. The CVI must also include the date of vaccination and the vaccine product used. The flu rhino must be administered at least two weeks before arrival. If the horse is coming in from a farm, the vaccine needs to be administered within three months of arrival.

Only those horses arriving directly from Palm Meadows and shipping into the Receiving Barn to race are excused from the CVI requirement.

Gulfstream Park Turf Course Reopens

The reopening of the Gulfstream Park turf course was delayed a day due to rain on Dec. 1, but the newly renovated surface was back in action for the feature race on Dec. 2, and it was thumbs up all around for the work done by 1S/T Racing’s Director of Turf Surfaces Leif Dickinson and his team.

“I think everybody was happy. It felt great out there. Even with the rain yesterday, it felt good,” jockey Julien Leparoux said. “I was pulling up and asking the other jocks, and they all seemed like they were happy with it. [Leif and his team] did a good job. I think the six months off, you can see now it feels good and looks good. It’s a big improvement.”

FTHA’s General Nominating Meeting and Awards Dinner Set for Jan. 7

The Florida THA’s annual General Nominating Meeting and Awards Dinner will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, from 6-9 p.m. at Ten Palms at Gulfstream Park. We invite all of our members to join us at this year’s event. Each FTHA member is welcome to bring one guest.

The night will start with a Cocktail Hour, followed by a Buffet Dinner. We will also honor this year’s FTHA Award Winners.

"Once again we are looking forward to our next Annual Nominating Meeting and Awards Dinner," said FTHA Board Member Teresa Palmer, who chairs the Election Committee. "Last year's dinner had such a wonderful turn out, the food was delicious and it was a great opportunity for us to honor our local horses and horsemen and women. We invite all to once again attend; let’s enjoy each other and continue to work together to make Gulfstream racing the best in the country."

The Florida THA is supervised and managed by a Board of no less than 11 and up to 15 Directors. Up to six seats are reserved for Owner/Directors, and up to six seats are reserved for Trainer/Directors. As many as three Directors may be either an owner or a trainer. Elections are held annually, and the term of all Directors is three years.

The next election will be held on March 15, 2023. At that time, three Directors will be up for re-election: Owner Tom Cannell, and trainers Patrick Biancone and David Fawkes.

In order to be a candidate for the FTHA Board of Directors, owners and trainers must be licensed as an owner and/or trainer and be in good standing, and must have started a horse five or more times during the 12 months immediately preceding the date of the election in which they are running for a seat on the Board. An individual licensed as an owner may only run for a seat on the Board as an owner; an individual licensed as a trainer or as an owner and trainer may only run for a seat on the Board as a trainer.

Nominations for the 2023 Election will be accepted during the General Nominating Meeting Jan. 7, 2023, and must be endorsed by three members of the Association, or be accompanied by a petition signed by no fewer than 75 members of the Association.
