Greetings

This month’s greetings represent a transition in our congregation as it is the last message written with Rabbi Brickman as our spiritual leader. At the end of June, he will begin his retirement “assignment” and the Sandhills Jewish Congregation will welcome

Rabbi Ruth Abusch-Magder to our pulpit.

During his May visit, we celebrated the rabbi’s eleven years with us. At both Friday night services and a retirement brunch the following morning, we acknowledged the meaningful role he has played in the life of our congregation, as well as personally in the lives of so many of our members. He has guided our religious growth and our growing SJC community. Although he is our part-time rabbi, his heart is here on a full-time basis. Whether he is leading services, teaching bar/bat mitzvah classes, conducting Torah study discussions, interacting with students, or providing comfort or counsel, he is engaged. We have benefited from his experience and his knowledge, and have enjoyed the warm personal way he reaches out to others.

For my husband and me, there was another aspect to our relationship with Rabbi Brickman, as he was also our “house guest.” Before we moved here full-time and he bought his own Pinehurst Condo, he stayed at ours each month. Initially, we were happy to help the congregation provide a comfortable place for him to stay, but we soon realized how much this also benefited us because the rabbi treated our home like his own. He kept us apprised of anything that didn’t seem right, he was happy to be around if we scheduled service people during his rabbi weekends and he interacted with our neighbors, keeping us both up-to-date on what was happening in the “neighborhood”. All of these things – and so many others – made it easier for us to live remotely.

As we got to know him and Michael, we had the opportunity to visit them in the Berkshires when we were in Albany, NY with our daughter and her family. And when she moved to Westchester County, NY, he and Michael told us all of the great things to do and restaurants to try in that area of the state. We looked forward to the times we could get together at venues outside of the Sandhills.

We all have had personal interactions with the rabbi that have made his tenure at our temple meaningful. We know that his retirement will not mean that we won’t see him again. As Rabbi Emeritus, he will always be part of our congregation and the mutual friendships and respect we share will continue to flourish.

Rabbi Brickman, in your book of life, as you turn the page to find new adventures, please keep a bookmark at the SJC chapter so you can easily return to the friendships and memories. We send you off with a quotation from The Big Book of Jewish Wit and Wisdom, which is our wish for you and Michael as you continue on your journey to go for the gusto: “May health and contentment be your portion to the end of your day.”

Shalom,

Marcey

President's Message

June Greetings

Sandhills Jewish Congregation is not just a house of worship. It is a house of learning and a house of community. As our fiscal year comes to an end, I realize we have much for which to be grateful and thankful.

We had a lovely Rabbi weekend in May, that included a special service planned by Mindy Fineman and Marcey Katzman. Yasher Koach ladies for an amazing job.

The next day, Saturday, we celebrated our beloved Rabbi Brickman’s retirement with an amazing brunch. Seventy-five of us joined together, over a delicious meal and lively entertainment, to celebrate the Rabbi and his many accomplishments these past eleven years. There were a lot of tears and laughs. Bonnie Gillman and her Social Committee did a spectacular job. Thank you and Yasher Koach, Susi Gordon, Marcey Katzman, Kathy Poteat, Jackie Rosenblum and Amy Walters.

Your Board is continuing to plan our upcoming year which will be very special. We will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary and the start of Rabbi Ruth Abusch-Magder’s pulpit. We have many exciting events planned for the year.

Our annual meeting will be on June 26, 2022 at 10am (Bagels and coffee will be served). Please plan to attend.

I hope we all have a safe summer and join is in July for our lay service and remember Rabbi Ruth will be joining us in August.

As always, I am a phone call or text away. Please reach out just to say “hello”.

Shalom,

Barbara Rothbeind,

President Sandhills Jewish Congregation/Beth Shalom

Rabbi's Message

Words cannot express my gratitude for the incredible retirement celebration the congregation arranged last month. From the service including an amazing presentation by the board, to the brunch, which was chock full of surprises, I will never ever forget a single moment of that day. The first Senior Rabbi with whom I served as an Assistant Rabbi taught me a lesson that has served me well. He said, “Always thank the committee.” Keeping that advice in mind and because I do not know the names of everyone who was involved in the planning of my retirement celebration and I do not want to omit anyone, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the committee who planned and executed an event that warmed my heart and will be forever etched in my memory. The memory book to which so many of you contributed is proudly displayed in my living room on a music stand that I found at an estate sale on the day of my party. Yes, I still found time to go to an estate sale even with all of the festivities. All I can say is thank you to a congregation that is truly my extended family to whom I will always be grateful not only for my retirement celebration but also for the eleven years of personal and professional satisfaction that you gave me.

As I wrote last month, my retirement weekend was not my final Shabbat with the congregation, so I hope that you will join us on Friday, June 10 for my “Encore Rabbi’s Weekend.” At our Shabbat service we will welcome the new members who have recently joined our congregation. Here I will mention an individual because I know that many if not most of these new members have joined our congregation as a result of the efforts of Amy Walters, our one-woman membership committee. The past two years have been challenging for most congregations including our own and very few temples have welcomed new members during the pandemic. Our temple stands out from many congregations in our Reform Movement in so many ways including our successful outreach to newcomers in our community. This coming Shabbat as we welcome our latest group of new members, we stand out in having gained new members during this most challenging time. Please join us for Shabbat services as we welcome our new members. Once again, we will be worshipping in person for those who fulfill the requirements set forth by our board, and we will provide the service on Zoom for those who wish to join us from home.

A message from Pola Lipson, Coordinator

I am honored to coordinate the onegs for the coming year.   We would like members to volunteer to be hosts for the onegs on June 10, July 15 and August 19. We will also begin to plan for the 2022/2023 year. I would be glad to arrange for you to be an oneg host on a day that would be meaningful to you (yahrzeit, birthday, anniversary, baby naming), or any Friday night that works with your schedule. There are usually a few households that like to get together as hosts. This is no problem.  I would be glad to plan this for you.

Please contact me: Pola Lipson 248-321-5530 or pola.lipson@gmail.com.

Celebrating with Rabbi Brickman

During Rabbi Brickman's May weekend, the congregation took the opportunity to pay tribute to his eleven years as our spiritual leader. Beginning with Friday evening Shabbat Services where board members made a presentation, and continuing to Saturday's Brunch at Forrest Creek Golf Club, there were lots of reasons to celebrate all of his accomplishments as well as his many personal relationships. For congregants that were not able to attend, or for those that did and want to relive the events, follow the links below.

Book Club
Book of Lost Names.jpg

The Book Club's next selection is "The Book of Lost Names" by Kristin Harmel. This is a powerful World War II story and the theme brings into focus the history of the many forgers who created false documents that helped Jewish children flee the Nazis. While fictional, this book draws from fact. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of bravery and love in the face of evil.

Book Club will meet on Sunday, July 10th at 3:00 PM

at the home of

Bonnie Gillman and Nick Christopher,

180 Lamplighter Village Drive, Pinehurst.

To RSVP contact Bonnie:

910-420-2609 or bongee7@aol.com.

The congregation is invited to attend and join the discussion. Dinner follows at a place yet to be determined.

Donation Card Opportunities
Traditional Donation Card
There are many ways we can support our congregation and sending a special card can be one of them. Ours have beautiful artwork, you can choose from several designs, and the message is a personal one. Whether it is a life-cycle event or a way to keep in touch, everyone loves to be remembered in this way. Our cards are $10.00 each, and that includes postage. Or buy a package of ten for $100.00. That way, you always have one in reserve.
Donation Card Packages
We are offering an addition to our $10.00 donation card. Packages of five cards (slightly smaller size) are now available for personal use. They sell for $25.00 for a 5 card package and members will be able to send the cards themselves. There is a choice of three pieces of artwork from our own members (one selection per package). The cards are blank on the inside but the back recognizes the donation to SJC. Buy for yourself or give as a gift.
These cards are lovely and a meaningful way to send any type of message while supporting the Sandhills Jewish Congregation.
