HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY

Webb, Stokes and Sparks, LLP attorney Jason Sosa was proud to be with his fellow attorneys for the 4th of July reading the Declaration of Independence in front of the Tom Green County District Courthouse. God bless our nation and save our democracy. Thanks to all the attorneys who fight every day for the truths we hold to be self evident.

VETERAN HIGHLIGHT

Kat Kelly

Kat served in the Marine Corps as a CH53 Helicopter Mechanic from 2014-2019. During her time in service, she participated in several training activities across the U.S. and deployed to Okinawa Japan. Kat met her husband in California, but home is where the heart is, and the couple decided that San Angelo was the best place to continue raising their two amazing little boys. Kat received her bachelor’s in criminal justice at Angelo State University before applying to Webb, Stokes and Sparks. While searching for a meaningful occupation, she searched for a place of employment that shared similar values to those she felt within herself. Kat wanted to find a way to give back to those in our community, to help individuals find value in themselves and in their lives, to give voice to people who have been wronged, and to know that she is making a positive impact in the life of another.

Kat shared her feelings on working at Webb, Stokes and Sparks: “This firm amplifies my goals ten-fold. Seeing the difference our work makes for our clients gives me purpose. I have learned a thing or two about finding family in unfamiliar places and the kindness, compassion, and supportive nature of the attorneys and employees in this office have made me feel right at home. This office is a family and one that I am so truly proud to be a part of.”Kat is a real asset to Webb, Stokes and Sparks.

Webb, Stokes & Sparks Employee Spotlight

Mary Ybarra

Mary Ybarra has been with Webb, Stokes and Sparks for 26 years of dedicated service to our clients and their best interests. Adding 8 more years at another firm for a total of 34 years working for Personal Injury Attorneys.

Mary is an expert at handling the impossible morass that is health care insurance especially with Medicare. She is self-taught about the Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, VA and federal insurance coverages, and is a pro at navigating those complicated programs. This has certainly helped in providing those services to our clients who are injured in a car wreck and have these as their health insurance coverage.

When she is not helping our clients, Mary enjoys time with her children and grandchildren. She loves watching BASEBALL especially when the Texas Rangers play the New York Yankees. She is a Yankees fan!! Mary loves to go on trips with her family, but especially loves going on Cruises with her dear sweet friends. Thank you, Mary, for your dedication to our firm and our clients!

Cris Bravo

Cris has been with the firm since November 16, 1998. She came to Webb, Stokes and Sparks after working seven years at Levi Strauss & Company. Cris went from a production line job to learning legal work with one of the best and well-respected lawyers in the region at Webb Stokes, and Sparks. As a legal secretary, Cris is one of the first contacts our clients reach out to when they visit our office or call Webb, Stokes and Sparks. Cris is outstanding at obtaining every detail of the legal matter so the lawyer can better evaluate the legal issue or refer the matter to other lawyers who may be better suited to handle their non-personal injury need.

Cris loves to serve and assist our community with the stress and headaches that comes when you have been injured in a car wreck or any other personal injury claim. Webb, Stokes and Sparks is not only her place of employment but a place she calls home. We are thankful to have Cris as part of our team.

Barratry and Illegal Solicitation

If you or somebody you know has recently been involved in a car crash then you already know that the experience can be stressful. Unfortunately some attorneys use unethical tactics to acquire contact information of victims. Known as "runners," "solicitors," or "ambulance chasers," these individuals are looking to make money by reselling your case. This unsolicited contact is called Barratry which is illegal and unethical.

How to Spot Barratry

Oftentimes the soliciting law firm will not contact you directly but will act through third parties and unaffiliated "runners" who try to get you signed up. Often they will represent themselves as being from an insurance company.

Some examples of barratry/solicitation include:

  • Soliciting employment by phone (text or call) or in person
  • Accepting payment for soliciting employment (case runners)
  • Paying or offering to pay victims or family members to solicit employment
  • Offering an advance payment on a potential verdict or settlement
  • Filing suit on behalf of a client without their knowledge or permission
  • Coercing or exerting undue influence on a potential client

If you do receive unsolicited calls after a car crash, be cautious about the information you give out, and do not sign any documents without knowing what they are first. Often times these documents will come in the form of text links directing you to a form that can be signed right from your cell phone where it is often difficult to read or understand.

Statutory Fines of $10,000.

If someone reaches out to you that you have not contacted first this might be grounds for barratry. You might be entitled to a $10,000 statutory penalty plus attorneys fees. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us at any time.
