Congrats to our Graduates & Summer Plans!

We want to give a huge congratulations to our three seniors who graduated from high school this year! Most have been with us since middle school. All of our graduates got into four-year universities, and we will stay in touch with them to ensure they are supported in this exciting new chapter. We are so proud of their academic achievements and emotional growth and can't wait to see them succeed at UC Merced, Sacramento State, and UC Santa Cruz.

Our students have been having a great summer. The middle school students are attending camps and summer school. Our high school youth are working, studying and joining the younger kids on weekly special outings. We have an open door policy at the schoolhouse and students come and go as they please. It has been great to hear to their stories and travel around the Bay Area to explore and have fun with them!

Another Successful Year for our Volunteers!

Home Away would not be what it is without our volunteers. You all have truly made a difference in our students lives.

This year's impacts includes:

85% of the students with a C grade level made academic improvements.

80% of the students with chronic absenteeism improved their attendance.

100% of high school students were accepted into a 4 year college.

90% of the students self reported having a caring adult at Home Away.

100% of the students self reported learning something new at Home Away.

Our volunteer chefs were instrumental in helping us create a home feeling environment and exposing the kids to new flavors from nutritious and yummy varieties of food. Did you know they help us serve over 2000 individual meals this year?

Collectively, this year Home Away volunteers donated 1980 of hours of their time.

Thank YOU volunteers for inputting your hours. This information is important to our program as it allows us to create impact notes that we use to apply for grants that help us keep our program running. Your dedication and love is felt every single day!

Recognizing our Advisory Council!

Home Away has extra dedicated volunteers that helps us with fundraising, events, and more. Please joining us in giving them a special shout out for helping us find a van, for finding corporate sponsors, volunteers to paint, clean and re-decorate, completing maintenance and repairs at the school and beach houses, for creating wonderful events, and for helping us find current data about Homeless youth in San Francisco.

Staff Updates

  • We are thrilled to announce that after a thorough process we hired a Senior Manager to oversee Home Away. Takiyah Humbles started this month. She has a deep connection with the Bay Area community, reflected in her collaborative work with the San Francisco Unified School District and nonprofits throughout the city, including the Department for Children and Youth and their Families (DCYF). Stay tuned for her official introduction in our next newsletter!
  • The Beach House program continues to be up and running and will again be under the leadership of our former School House Program Manager, who was originally the Beach House Coordinator.
  • We are also happy to report that despite budget cuts we will continue offering support to the now nine Home Away students attending college. Our College and Career Manager, is now our College Coach!
  • We are also looking forward to welcoming 2 Americorps and a mental health provider this year.
