SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION
SERMON NOTES
There are 5 teachings, or discourses found in the gospel of Matthew. In the summer, we read the first of those with the Sermon on the Mount. This week, we find ourselves in the last discourse in this book concerning the end times. And in chapter 25, we find a section of scripture dedicated to how we treat one another, especially those that are in need. It is a call to a radical way of life that is inclusive, welcoming, and loving. So, join us this week as we explore what it means to care for the least of these.

SPECIAL NEEDS
Anna Gerhardt, Sally's daughter lives in Barnardsville, NC. She is currently at home and working with the restoration of her community. We have been asked to assist with various supplies for her work. If you are looking for ways to continue to give to those in need after Hurricane Helene, she needs diapers, baby formula, baby wipes for those in need. ADDED NEEDS: baby clothes for ages 2 and under; and Gatorade for helpers and workers who are aiding in the recovery effort. Thank you all for your generosity during this time.

COMING EVENTS AND MEETINGS IN OCTOBER
This year’s TRUNK OR TREAT is being planned for Saturday, October 19th from 3-5 pm. We are hoping to basically keep the same set up as last year with a couple of exceptions. We would like to add a couple of decorated car trunks with candy, goodies and other treats outside the back entrance of the gym to put attendees in the spirit of things and to have our greeter tent there as well. The gym will be for games, other activities and food, along with seating for older family members. We will be looking for volunteers to assist in getting the gym set up and decorated during the week leading up to the event. Volunteers will also be needed to assist with the games and to distribute candy, school supplies and other items. If you haven't volunteered, there is still time to do so; just give Brandon a call. Come in costume and join in the fun!
ROLL WATAUGA SQUARE - Watauga Avenue's way to celebrate Halloween is to "roll" Watauga Square, a subsidized apartment building at the comer of Watauga Avenue and West Main Street, providing essential household items to be used as prizes for the
residents' bingo games. These residents often lack the money and/or the
transportation to go shopping for needed personal and housekeeping supplies, and each bingo winner (and all the players are winners!) gets to select a prize from a table of donated items. Toilet tissue is a particularly popular prize (hence the "rolling"), but you may choose to donate any of the items on the lists posted on the mission bulletin
board and the boxes in the hallway. Our donations will go to Watauga Square Apts. after Sunday, October 27th.

GREEN TEAM AND RELATED ACTIVITIES
Another Green Walk is planned for Wednesday, October 16th at 10:30 am at Willow Springs Park, located on Huffine Road just off West Walnut Street.
A Green Team meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 21st at 11:30 am in the Church Parlor.
An Energy Commission meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 29th at 5:30 pm in the Conference Room. Ian Huddleston has sent a video walkthrough of our system that I want us to view together so that we can all have a little better understanding of how it all fits together to produce our power. I also would like for us to prepare for applying for our federal tax credit at the first of January. And lastly, we need to have a conversation about how we want to move forward using extra monies we have and will have in the Energy Efficiency Project Fund.

Hidden Treasures: Finding Hope at the End of Life’s Journey
By Robin Bertram
(236/BER)
Many people are facing life-threatening diseases, terminal illness, and the long-term care of elderly parents, but have few resources to rely on in these difficult times. They often keep their challenges private only to suffer in silence with no real support system. This book delivers practical solutions to the problems everyone must deal with when they are experiencing the degradation of the quality of their life or the potential loss of a loved one.
Based on experiences derived from 25 years of prayer ministry, Bertram’s Hidden Treasures provides insight and guidance to equip patients, family members, and friends to walk through these challenging times with foresight, looking for and expecting to see God at work in many miraculous ways. It offers sound advice grounded in the truths found in Scripture and the wisdom revealed through real-life stories and case studies.
| |
This book helps those who have ever wondered . . .
· If God is good, why are we going through this?
· What will our family do during this crisis?
· How do we fight the fear that is trying to consume us?
· How can we encourage reconciliation in our family?
· Where can we find peace in the journey?
· What happens when we die?
· Is there life after death?
· What is heaven like?
| |
Hidden Treasures will inspire, motivate, and encourage loved ones to begin to walk the road to heaven without the fear and anxiety associated with death and dying. They’ll discover that the Word of God has answers to the questions that seem to have no answer; and that comfort awaits as they begin to view their situation from a heavenly perspective. Ultimately, it reveals that hope is available, death with dignity is possible, and there are hidden treasures to embrace along the way.
