Planet Home Lending
Planet Home Lending, a leading national mortgage lender, servicer, and asset manager, has expanded its footprint in Susanville, California, with Branch Manager Cheryl Holmes (NMLS ID#229161) and her team, including Mortgage Loan Officers Lindsey Martin (NMLS ID#1519818), Kerri Cobb (NMLS ID#569600), and Loni Reginato (NMLS ID#478517) and Processor Danielle Dinkelo. The team is licensed in California, Nevada, Idaho and Montana.
Holmes, most recently with Axia Home Loans, combines 25 years of industry experience with a passion for helping first-time home buyers. “We’re seeing a lot of first-time buyers turning to affordable manufactured homes and new construction to achieve homeownership,” she said.
“Down payment and closing cost assistance from the California Housing Finance Authority and Golden State Finance Authority are also very popular in our market.”
Another local market trend she’s seeing is existing homeowners turning to renovation refinancing to make upgrades on their current home instead of buying a move-up home. “They want to keep their existing low-rate mortgage, so they pull cash out with a second mortgage to pay for an addition, or to remodel kitchens and bathrooms.”
“We are thrilled to have Cheryl and her team join the Planet family,” said John Bosley, Planet Home Lending President, Mortgage Lending.
“With her expert leadership, extensive experience, superb local reputation for customer excellence, she is a perfect fit here where we know homeownership has the potential to change lives and where we are committed to being a part of the positive change in people’s lives.”
With Planet’s wide array of loan products, Holmes is poised to help even more families achieve homeownership, driving growth and strengthening the company’s presence in our region.

2024 Lassen 4H Hall of Fame:
Inductee #3 CHP 140 Squad Club
All week long on SusanvilleStuff, in celebration of National 4-H Week, we will be featuring this year’s four inductees into the Lassen County 4-H Hall of Fame.
By Paiton Hallmark, Russell Mallery, Samantha Medvin and Layton Allen. Interview and photographs provided by CHP 140 Squad Club.
Without the support of community-based organizations and volunteers the 4-H program here in Lassen County would not be able to flourish the way it does.
| |
|
So many adult volunteers spend countless hours devoting time investing into our youth in positives ways.
One such organization that we feel has gone above and beyond in their service to Lassen County 4-H is the CHP 140 Squad Club. The CHP 140 Squad Club is a 501c3 comprised of local CHP Susanville employees and their families (not to mention it has been around for over 30 years). You may have seen them at our fair where they provide their famous tri-tip sandwiches and 140 Burgers during the week.
| |
What you may not know is that this group is also responsible for contributing to Sober Graduation and helps sponsor multiple youth-based groups and activities throughout the year. In the last decade the 140 Squad Club has donated over $50,000 to sober graduation alone that they raise by putting on their annual golf tournament. If you enjoy golfing – don’t miss it! It’s held annually in June.
During fair week these employees donate their own time to have piping hot coffee, breakfast burritos and donuts available for our local 4-H and FFA youth and their families when nothing else is open yet. They stay until almost midnight each night of the fair to serve our community a great meal.
You might ask yourself – what’s so special about selling tri-tip sandwiches at the fair? They take their profit from the weeks sales of food at the Lassen County Fair and on Sunday they purchase 4-H and FFA members livestock with it at the Lassen County Junior Livestock Auction. In the 140 Squad’s existence it’s estimated that they have purchased over 50 animals. They are a true gem that our program is lucky to know!
It’s an honor, CHP 140 Squad Club, to induct you as our third member into the Lassen County 4-H Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

Lassen County Probation: Leading
the Way in Family-Centered Care
By Natasha Cote
Lassen County Case Coordinating Supervisor
The Family First Prevention Services Act represents a significant shift in how child welfare systems approach family preservation and well-being. The primary goal of FFPSA is to reduce the number of children entering foster care by providing families with access to services that address the root causes of instability, such as mental health challenges, substance use, and parenting difficulties.
| |
|
By investing in prevention-focused services, FFPSA aims to strengthen families and keep children safely in their homes whenever possible.
The Lassen County Implementation Team has been working diligently to tailor this program to the specific needs of our community. This team consists of a collaboration between various county departments and local partners, all focused on ensuring that families receive the evidence-based services they need, at the right time, to prevent unnecessary foster care placements.
| |
A Collaborative and Tailored Approach
One of the primary initiatives led by the program has been the development of the FFPSA Implementation Guide. This comprehensive guide provides clear, actionable strategies for all involved partners, ensuring a consistent and effective program experience for every family served.
By focusing on practical tools and guidelines, our implementation team ensures that no detail is overlooked in delivering services to families across Lassen County. Our team has embraced a highly collaborative approach. We are working closely with Lassen County Behavioral Health, Public Health, Wraparound services, and Child Welfare departments, as well as key community organizations such as the Office of Education and Susanville Indian Rancheria.
Together, we are piloting cases to proactively address potential barriers families might face when accessing services, with the goal of refining and improving the program for long-term sustainability.
Meeting the Unique Needs of Lassen County
Lassen County faces unique challenges, especially as a rural community with diverse populations, including Native American, African American, Latino, and Pacific Islander families. By incorporating a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive framework into our program, we aim to ensure that every family—regardless of background—feels supported and empowered to make positive changes.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to refine and expand the FFPSA program, the implementation team remains committed to building a stronger foundation for the families we serve. Our efforts are not only aimed at responding to crises but at preventing them. We strive to ensure that families have the support they need to thrive in their communities. With the dedicated work of our team and the collaborative efforts of our partners, we are excited to see how this program will evolve and strengthen Lassen County’s future.

Survey Crew to Start Work
October 10, 1940
E. E. Erhart, associate highway engineer of the bureau of public roads, and Carl Schubert, civil engineer, both of San Francisco, have established headquarters in Susanville in connection with a location survey of the eastern portion of the Feather Lake Forest highway. A crew of eight men is established here for the winter for the work.
The Feather Lake road was placed in the forest highway system as Class 3 road in 1937, according to F. D. Preston, supervisor of the Lassen National Forest. Its termini are Mt. Shasta, Mt. Lassen, and the state highway on the northwest at Hat Creek, and the Red Bluff-Susanville highway on the southeast, five miles west of Susanville.
A reconnaissance of this highway route was made by Erhart in 1935, and later, during the same year, a location survey of the route from Westwood northerly to Poison Lake was made. Between Poison Lake and Route 77, near Old Station, a survey has been completed. The leg of the highway from Westwood north, towards McCoy Flat, has been surveyed.
Work to be undertaken by the crew at this time is the survey of the route from Susanville to a junction with the Westwood – Poison Lake section near McCoy Flat, a virgin area, rich in scenic splendor and available to all traffic in this section of northern California and western Nevada.
