St. Andrew's Children and Family Ministry

Dear Families,

Welcome to the last week in January. I spent some time on the east coast last week where it really felt like January-grey and cold! It was a great trip but, I am happy to be home to see some sunshine and feel some warmth (and of course spend time with your children in Sunday School!).

Candlemas is February 2nd, and we will have a special celebration in church on February 5th. It will be a fun interactive service with prayer stations, and I hope you can join us.

Candlemas is when we commemorate the presentation of Jesus at the Temple and celebrate him as the light of the world. It is traditional to bless candles on Candlemas, and we will distribute candle making kits this Sunday at Sunday School. You can make your candle at home then bring it with you on February 5th to have it blessed. If you can’t make it this week, please reach out to me and we will arrange another way for you to get your kit.

Keep reading for info on my Black History Month contest, important dates, and some bunnies to celebrate Lunar New Year.

Hoping you feel sunshine and the warmth of Christ's light surrounding you this week.

Much Love,

-Erin

God, with you there is no darkness. May your light of hope shine for families today. Show us glimpses of your presence with us and the comfort you bring.

In the busyness of today, help us to take a moment to be still and sit with you. To slow down, breathe deeply, and release our burdens to your strong hands. You are trustworthy, good, and true, and we thank you for caring for us so deeply and beautifully. Open our eyes to see you at work today. Give us your light.

In Jesus name, Amen.
This Week in Sunday School

This week in Sunday School we will tell the story of John Lewis, the late congressman and civil rights activist. We will also hand out candle making kits so you can bring a candle to church next week and have it blessed during our Candlemas celebration. No Sunday School next week as the children will join us in church to celebrate Candlemas.

To make sure you are in the know about all things Sunday School, including this year's enrichment opportunities, please register. Even if you're not sure you can make it on a regular basis, registration helps us plan and keep your children in the loop for special activities. You can fill out online registration here or you can print out this PDF and give it to me at church.

Who Am I?

February is Black History Month

Here are some great resources to help you participate fully in Black History Month. I particularly suggest the article "Picture Books for Antiracists" by Miriam Willard McKenney who delivered a stellar presentation at the conference I just attended. Please contact me if you have any questions.

For Black History Month I am doing a special contest. Each week if you can tell me who is in the above picture and something about them, I will enter you/your child into a drawing for one of the books from the linked article. Just email me the information and you're entered! 1 winner each week.
