Happy New Year!

Dear Friends and Family of The Landing School,

And… They’re off!!

Following a much deserved Christmas break and various off-site and on-site IPAP (Inter-Program Activity Period) initiatives, the students are diving head first into the second semester. After a couple of silent weeks, it’s nice to hear the saws humming and the hammers banging again, not to mention the sound of busy students sharing ideas and experiences.

IPAP has given the students a fresh perspective on the marine industry and where their place in it will be someday. That someday will be upon us soon as industry representatives start recruiting early in the second semester. While we all have our sights set on the major milestone of graduation in May, I think everyone is looking forward to the work and the learning ahead of us.

Stay tuned!

Sincerely,

Sean Fawcett, President

Despite a series of snow days, the wooden boat building students met their goal of rolling over both Town Class Sloops this week. The students have done a great job working on the boats so far and they're looking forward to sailing them in the Spring!

Enrolling in the Wooden Boat Building Program - A Blog Series by Tom Laaser

"Enrolling in the Wooden Boat Program was both exciting and terrifying. My woodworking experience is beginner at best, not to mention I’d decided to jump right into boatbuilding, a woodworking field that feels mysterious to even some master carpenters. Prior to the first day of class I was given a list of tools to buy. Outside of a hammer and screwdrivers, I had no idea what any of the tools were or how I’d use them. I couldn’t imagine I’d be able to build something with them. The tool list came with several books to buy as well. I flipped through them, but like the tools, most of it felt like a mystery. I hoped that once I got my hands on things then it would click."

IPAP Recap

There’s nothing like stepping into a workplace for a couple of weeks to test your own skills, preparation, and enthusiasm. Thanks to a wide array of design firms, boatyards, marinas, and production shops that generously welcomed Landing School students for the first two weeks of January, our students returned to campus positively altered by the experience. It was written on their faces and in the tone of their voices. They have done us proud with their stories, their class presentations, and their job offers!

Director of Education

Brooklin Boatyard in Brooklin, ME

We had multiple students at Brooklin Boatyard in Brooklin, Maine for the IPAP externship. Ian (YD), Shane (WBB), Sebastian (WBB) and Noah (WBB), had a great time learning the ins and outs of high-quality craftsmanship at their shop.

"My favorite part was being welcomed into what felt like a family business, and a place where everyone was excited to be there. I didn't feel like another cog in the machine, I felt like they truly valued me as an individual."

- Noah, Wooden Boat Building

Huckins Yachts in Jacksonville, FL

"I’ve been taught at a young age, “to know where you're going, you must know where you’ve come from”, and I can’t imagine a better place for me to spend this time learning how an industry started, and applying that to where I think it can go. A massive thanks to Cindy Purcell for the extreme generosity, and giving me the chance to come do this independent study. I’ve learned a lot about how a historic company functions and adjusts across a constantly shifting marketplace while staying true to their roots and pushing on the forefront of innovation."

- Noah, Yacht Design

Internal IPAP

A handful of Landing School students stayed at the school during IPAP and took Wooden Boat Building, Marine Systems, and Yacht Design. Students in wooden boat building learned the basics of hand tools, and how to build a half-hull. Students in yacht design learned the steps to designing a boat from start to finish, and marine systems students worked on DC panels and did a short introduction to composites and plumbing!
