American Factory, a Documentary
Sunday, November 13, 3:00 PM
In post-industrial Ohio, a Chinese billionaire opens a factory in an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand Americans. Early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America. “American Factory” is a 2019 American documentary film directed by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, about Chinese company Fuyao 's factory in Moraine, a city near Dayton, Ohio, that occupies Moraine Assembly, a shuttered General Motors plant. The film had its festival premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Movie Review on ZOOM: Please watch the movie prior to our Movie Review. “American Factory” is currently available to watch on Netflix.  Our discussion will begin with a review of the main plots of the movie. We will also explore the spiritual themes of the movie. Questions? Please contact Roger Steinke.

Discussion Book: The Complete Maus
by Art Spiegelman
November 22, 7:00 pm on Zoom
Discussion Leader: Donna Hillard
Maus I: A Survivor's Tale and Maus II - the complete story of Vladek Spiegelman and his wife, living and surviving in Hitler's Europe. The author addresses the horror of the Holocaust through cartoons, captures the everyday reality of fear and is able to explore the guilt, relief and extraordinary sensation of survival - and how the children of survivors are in their own way affected by the trials of their parents. A contemporary classic of immeasurable significance.

Linda Siebert has created a new book for our library, Our Pandemic Story, and are available to order for $39 (paperback) and hardcover. The book was inspired by and created from the Power Point that Linda prepared for our March 2021 birthday celebration during the pandemic. A copy is available in the library to check out or view. Linda Siebert and Roger Steinke are taking orders and payments for the group order (with considerable savings).  Orders must be placed by November 12 so they are available for Christmas. Please make checks payable to First Lutheran Church.

The FLC library will sponsor the annual Share Your Favorite Photo contest. All entries will be displayed at our 137th birthday celebration on March 12 2022! Start “clicking” and watch for upcoming details in future Newsletters.

We have new children’s books in the library including books by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor “ Living Together in Community”.

Check it Out!
The above link will be updated with September's financial information after the Finance Committee is able to review the financial statements at their monthly meeting.
Thank you to all who have continued their faithful giving.
Listed below are ways for you to share with First Lutheran even when you can't attend in person:
* Mail in your checks. We are still doing weekly deposits.
* Set up electronic giving by using the Give Online button at flc.bothell.org, or calling Vanco services at 800-675-7430. Note: there is a one time fee to FLC for the set up of bank to bank transactions. There are approximately 3% transaction fees on all credit card donations, making credit card and debit card giving more effective if combined into a monthly transaction, rather than smaller amounts, weekly.
* Set up one time or auto payments through your bank’s pay service

Thank you for your faithfulness.

Scrip is a Great Way to Increase Your Giving
with Purchases You'd Make Anyway!
Proceeds from FLC's Scrip program recently paid for the shipment of quilts and school/health kits to Lutheran World Relief. Your purchases really do make a difference!

Purchase your Scrip gift cards on Sunday morning before and after worship or this is an excellent time to set up Shop with Scrip and Presto Pay for instant Scrip purchases and redemption on your smart phone. This is a super easy way to continue to support FLC's Scrip program. (See below for more information.)

If you are unable to attend worship or purchase Scrip online, you may mail a check to FLC Scrip, attention Gordy Phelps, with a note of what scrip cards you wish to purchase, and he will mail the cards back to you.

We have several other opportunities for earning money while you shop, for FLC's many social ministry programs:

2. Sign up for Amazon Smile and name First Lutheran Church as your charity. Every time you shop with Amazon Smile FLC receive .05% of your purchase price. You can still use Amazon Prime. Get your kids to sign up, too! In the 3rd quarter of 2021, your Amazon Smile purchases earned $84 for Social Ministries!

3. Link your Fred Meyer rewards card to their Community Rewards program for First Lutheran Church. All of your purchases will result in a quarterly donation to FLC.

If you have questions email Gordy Phelps.
Thank you!
Dear First Lutheran Church,
Thank you for keeping Olav’s US Marine picture on the church military service board and including him in the weekly prayers for the past 8 years. It has been a blessing and great comfort to our entire family.
Olav has now successfully completed the basic commitment of 6 years active duty in the Marine Reserves and 2 years on call. It was an honor for him to serve his country and is proud to retire as a US Marine Corporal. He is currently a full-time student at Orange Coast College in California.
Thank you again for keeping Olav in your prayers. May God continue to bless and keep all of you.
Love, Randall and Elizabeth Wampler and family
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE COMPASS HOUSING TOP FIVE MOST NEEDED ITEMS DRIVE! During the month of October, First Lutheran Church collected needed items for the Compass Housing Hygiene Center in Pioneer Square and to different area shelters. Again, THANK YOU for your help and support!
August Council Meeting Notes
At our September council meeting, we had our calendars out to save the date for the amazing annual youth auction coming up on February 5, 2023! We hope you will also save the date for great food, lovely auction items, and even better company!

We are excited to announce Derrick StaRosa has been elected to a 2-year term on the endowment committee. We thank him for his service in this capacity. We are still looking for one more person to serve on the endowment committee.

Pastor Berg reported on the adult education survey. He appreciated everyone who participated. We went over the results and read all your comments. This will help guide Pastor Berg in future planning for the adult education hour.

The parking lot has been repaved (as of September 30). Have you seen our newish signs that say, No Public Parking? These signs have alleviated the problems of a significant number of cars parked for days at a time, and cars parking to use nearby businesses, causing parking issues for our own members and preschool parents. If you hear of an event happening near the church that could benefit from the use of our parking lot, please let them know we do accept building & use applications for parking lot usage. We are happy to open our lot to our community, they just need to ask!

Happy Fall!

Church Council President
Creation Care
As of July 13, 2022, it’s estimated that our nation produces 268 million tons of waste, with 140 million tons of it going into landfills annually. The average American throws away about 4.5 pounds of trash each day; an American family of 4 throws away as much as 18 pounds per day. This adds up to about 1,642 pounds per person per year and 6,570 pounds per family! What are the top 3 items that Americans throw away that end up in a landfill?

* 30.63 million tons of food.
* 26.82 million tons of plastic.
* 18.35 million tons of paper and paperboard.

How can each of us help reduce the trash we create? November 15th is National Recycling Day! This day was originally established as an annual event in 1997. But we know that every day should be recycling day for the world. Some things we can do are:

1. Minimize the amount of food waste and put it in a compost bin instead of trash.
2. Understand the rules of your local service provider about recycling. Because different service providers may use different processing facilities, sorting recycling for curbside pickup isn’t always an easy task, but it is doable.
3. Clean recyclables such as those that contained food prior to putting them in the recycle bin. Otherwise, all your efforts could go to waste, literally. Unclean containers can create curbside contamination, which could then cause the entire load of recyclable materials to end up in a landfill anyway.
4. Buy recycled and recyclable products.

As of April, 2021, there are over 3,000 active landfills in the United States, which means that as much as 1,800,000 acres of habitat have been sacrificed to take care of the garbage we create. This month we also celebrate Thanksgiving. One way we can thank our Father is to take care of this world that He has given to us.
