A Message from our VP of Student Life and Mission

Dear Carondelet Community,

Happy New Year and welcome back to the second semester! It was so good to see our students back on campus. The classrooms and halls are just not the same unless the buzz of students sharing, working, studying, and having fun is filling all spaces on campus.

As students are back in class, events and activities are back in full swing as well. We began our semester with a moment of spiritual reflection. Last Friday we gathered as a school community for a short prayer service in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. We spent time reflecting on Dr. King’s message and the CSJ charism of Unifying Love. This next week our first Junior Shalom retreat of the year heads to Redwood Alliance Retreat Center. The Shalom retreat is one that supports spiritual reflection and connection with God in the midst of a very busy academic year.

This coming Friday, we host our annual Teen Hackathon. This event features teams of students challenged with designing and pitching an innovative new product, service, or program that positively impacts the future world using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a guide. Prizes will be awarded in categories to include best overall, most creative, most inclusive, healthiest hacks, and more.

Our winter sports teams have been busy on the court and the pitch over break as well. Both Soccer and Basketball have enjoyed success in the first part of their seasons. We do have Soccer SOS (Support our Sisters) games this coming Thursday at the CAC. We play Foothill High School with JV at 4:30 PM and Varsity at 6:30 PM.

Finally, there are a couple of events to look forward to at the end of January and the beginning of February that I wanted to share with you. On Friday, Jan. 27, the DEI Student Council will be hosting Carondelet’s second annual cultural festival, “Community during Community.” Students will be able to purchase food, make crafts, and learn about different cultures represented at Carondelet and in our larger community. February 8 kicks off our annual RISE events. RISE stands for Respect, Inclusion, Solidarity, and Empowerment. Over the past decade, we have raised awareness and advocacy for various women’s issues. This year we are collaborating with De La Salle. Freshmen and sophomores from both schools will attend an assembly at De La Salle with Juniors and Seniors attending one at Carondelet. Both schools are hosting speakers who are experts in their field in bystander interventions and building healthy relationships. On the evening of February 8, we also will be offering a parent education night expanding on these themes. Please refer to the RISE section in this E-news for information on how to RSVP for the parent night.

Blessings,

Jennifer Reinwald

Vice Principal of Student Life and Mission

Reminders + Requests

College of Siskiyous Classes Available

One of the amazing opportunities offered to our students, is access to taking a college-level course through the College of the Siskiyous. The only cost is for textbook fees (scholarships for textbooks are available). These classes can not be applied for graduation at Carondelet, but they will be eligible for college credit when you graduate. Check out this link for access to all the information you need to get started! Enrollment ends Wednesday, Jan. 25.

New Academic Calendar Available

The 2023-24 Academic Calendar is now available on our website.

Attendance Office

Important Reminders

Thank you to the parents and caregivers who call and email in to notify us of their student’s attendance. This is greatly appreciated!

Students are considered “chronically absent” if they miss 10% of the school days they are enrolled in - even if these days are called in. As a precautionary measure, we notify families once students meet certain thresholds to help ensure that students stay on track to graduate and that they are receiving the appropriate support here at school.

If your student must stay home because they are ill, make sure that they have asked teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom.

COVID Protocol

We want to remind students and families of the safety measures proven to mitigate the spread of colds, flu, and COVID: washing hands, staying home when you’re unwell, and masking indoors. If your student has tested positive for COVID, please reach out to the Attendance Office as soon as possible.

If you have questions about attendance, please reach out to

Stephanie Gutierrez, Attendance Coordinator, or Caitlin Main, Dean of Students.

RISE

Upcoming Events in February

Carondelet and De La Salle will be partnering for RISE (Respect – Inclusion – Solidarity – Empowerment) this February. This year’s theme will focus on healthy relationships and ending gender-based violence developing respect for all persons and caring for the "Dear Neighbor without distinction." The RISE events will begin on February 8 with two joint assemblies from violence prevention experts, one for our freshmen/sophomores, and another for our juniors and seniors. Ashley Bendiksen, our speaker for the junior and senior classes, will also speak on Feb. 8 at 6:30 PM in the Carondelet Jean Hofmann Center for Innovation for all parents interested in attending in person or on Zoom. Please mark your calendars and RSVP here.

Uniform Updates

Junior Prom and Senior Ball Dress Code

Junior Prom and Senior Ball are exciting events for our students this spring. Both events are formal and students are expected to dress up for the occasion. Per our Student Handbook, as with any school event, attire must be appropriate for school. We encourage students to have conversations with their families about what appropriate means to them and to connect with the Deans or Maggie Lettire '13 if they have any questions about a specific dress or item of clothing.

Cold Weather Approved Uniforms

As the cold weather continues, we are allowing solid-colored outerwear jackets, coats or vests to be worn over Carondelet/De La Salle sweatshirts. This is to ensure that students are warm enough on campus and during passing periods. Please note that flannels and non-Carondelet/De La Salle sweatshirts/fleeces are not permitted. Additionally, solid-colored black tights or leggings can be worn under skirts. Sweatpants and pajamas are not permitted. We encourage students to layer up and dress for the weather.
