Dear Farm Friends,
As promised, here’s the first in a series of brief encounters with Mountain Bounty’s farmers. Maia Lipkin, 36, grew up in Nevada County, started here in 2012, quickly worked her way up, and now, along with Cory Jones, is one of our two senior farm managers.

How did you get to Mountain Bounty?
I had no idea that there was any of this kind of farming happening in this area but a friend invited me to one of the Mountain Bounty harvest festivals in the fall of 2011, that was at the old original farm site, and I met Jeremy Mineau (Jeremy, who now owns and operates Super Tuber Farm, also got his farming start here at Mountain Bounty) and he gave me a tour of the broccoli fields. I called you a couple weeks later and asked for a job, you told me to come back in the spring and said you could offer maybe one day a week, and then quickly offered me full-time work, and then I just never looked back.
| |
So tell me what you’re doing now, what’s your role here now?
I manage all of our crew, and in close collaboration with Cory Jones who manages the field operations, I am responsible for coordinating everything from transplanting to weeding, to supporting the harvest manager and crew as well. I’m also responsible for training the new employees and supporting continuing employees. Over the years I’ve really honed into managing where we spend our time, and prioritizing how we get things done on the farm. I imagine myself as a helper.

What do you like about it, what has kept you here so long?
I came in a time where there was a lot of opportunity for growth, and you really quickly put a lot of trust in me. I was able to step up into a role of being able to take on more, you focused in on what I was good at, and where I needed to grow. Also, the culture here really caught me, it felt a lot more meaningful than my prior government job. There, I felt like it was about how do we waste as much time as possible in a day, and this is the exact opposite. Here, it’s like how do we maximize every moment. I think what really really keeps me coming back is there’s constant room for learning and growth. So despite having been here for years, I continuously have the opportunity to improve something that didn’t quite go as we thought it would the previous year. And it’s like a free gym membership as well!
| Another thing that’s unique about Mountain Bounty is that is doesn’t consume my whole world. On many farms, it’s like you’re a farmer so you just work nonstop. Here’s there’s a culture and a structure where I work hard when I’m here, and then I’m able to leave it behind and have other parts to my life, that’s huge for me. | |

Recipes, storage tips, inspiration and nutrition information:

Whip up this Creamy Dill Dressing (Click here) and toss it on a salad with your Lettuce, Cabbage and Cucumber. This dressing has a slightly different twist with the addition of miso and tahini!

-
This Basic Bok choy Recipe (Click here) is a stir-fry that can be served as-is, or you can add meat or tofu to make it more substantial. It's one of my favorite ways to load up on leafy greens quickly and easily. Serve with fluffy white rice or over noodles in soup.
