Welcome to the Georgetown Lombardi Arts & Humanities Program (AHP) newsletter. In this issue, we welcome you to join us for the AHP "Nature's Embrace" Art Opening Reception on September 27th, spotlight new AHP Artist-in-Residence Sara Matayoshi, and share a Stretch Break video from former AHP movement artist-in-residence Alison Waldman.

Friday, September 27th from 5 pm- 7 pm in the Lombardi Atrium.

"Nature's Embrace: Healing Through Harmony" features artworks by

visual artist Martha Spak.The exhibition will be displayed

at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Adult Clinic in

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital from

September 16th, 2024 to January 31st, 2025.

Welcoming AHP Artist-in-Residence

Sara Matayoshi

Sara Matayoshi has earned recognition for both her artistry as a performing violinist and as a therapeutic musician. Sara served as a core violinist in the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for several years. As a part of their Music and Wellness Quartet, she provided live music for various health-care facilities around the Knoxville area in Tennessee. During these visits, Sara worked side-by-side with a music therapist for group and one-on-one sessions.


With the support of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, she became a Certified Music Practitioner. In this role, Sara has offered therapeutic music in a variety of hospital settings including Neonatal Intensive Care Units, Oncology Departments, and Cardiovascular Units, Hospice Care and Skilled Nursing Facilities.

In Washington, D.C., Sara collaborates with music organizations including the Iris Music Project, A Musical Heart, and Sound Impact. She is a current member of "The President's Own" United States Marine Chamber Orchestra and is a frequent substitute musician with the National Symphony Orchestra.

The Georgetown Lombardi Arts & Humanities Program (AHP) promotes a holistic approach to healthcare for patients, caregivers, physicians, nurses, staff members, and students through the use of music, dance, expressive writing, and visual arts. These therapeutic modalities are normally provided throughout the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and online through Eventbrite courses. The AHP is a program of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
