National School Counseling Week - Helping Students Dream Big

We would like to thank all of our counselors and social workers for all they do for Westlake students. Thank you:

Ailyn Cook won a Gold Key and is now competing for national Scholastic awards.

Kenan Alsabony earned a silver key and 2 honorable mentions. He will have a booth at Fan Expo in March.

Helen Wilmer earned a silver key.

Sam Wohleber earned a silver key and The Janey Award with $100 prize.

Congratulations WHS Demon Bowlers

Sophomore, Chase Kelly not only won the individual boys bowling GLC tournament, he was also named Great Lakes Conference Athlete of the Year for Bowling.

The Lady Demons recently set a new school record with a single game score of 932.

The Boys JV Bowling team is undefeated.

Demons Chatterbot

Junior Matthew Lomax made the Ohio Technology & Engineering Educators Assn. newsletter with his creation of his Demon robot. The idea was born out of the need to educate other students about T&E classes and activities available at WHS.

Matthew designed 3D printed parts and wrote software to make the robot talk. It took several weeks to get it operational. Now, the robot lives in the T&E showcase in the hall and makes announcements at the beginning of each class period to all who walk past. Matthew hopes the short, informative monologue will spark an interest in students to learn more.

Changing of the Guard

Current LBMS principal, Tom Faska will retire at the end of the school year. Tom came out of retirement and agreed to lead LBMS for one year, but we have been fortunate to have him stay for an additional year. He has been dedicated to our staff and students and will be greatly missed.

DJ Shaw is being recommended to fill the position. DJ has been with Westlake for 2 years as an assistant principal at WHS. Prior to becoming a Demon, he spent 12 years as a high school math teacher, coach and administrator.

Rugby Club is up and running .... literally running!

Led by Coach Rob Pace, DIS fifth and sixth graders have teamed up to form the first ever Rugby Club. Practices began February 1 and games will kick off in April. They are learning a lot and are anxious to start the season.

Rugby is a game for all types of student athletes. It promotes a culture of teamwork, camaraderie, and hard work.
