Engineering Design Students contributing to Casino Night Auction!

Mrs. Mayhan's Engineering Design students began a project at the end of last semester to make unique, Cardinal Boxes for this year's online auction.

After planning out, cutting, drilling, sawing with both manual and circular saws, these students are finally seeing the fruits of their labor. Students learned how to take scrap wood (thanks to generous donations and help of a few parents) and create a nesting box for cardinals to roost in for the winter. In the process, they made mistakes and had to come up with solutions to fix those mistakes. The biggest challenge was learning how to safely use a powerful circular saw to make a 45 degree angle called a bevel cut for the roof. The next step in the process is to sand, paint, and gloss the wood.

These will be ready in time for Casino Night! Way to go Provets!

Internship Student Making a Difference

Providence offers an internship class for upperclassmen. This course allows students to intern at businesses, work places, and non-profit organizations throughout the city. Some students intern at more than one location, switching sites each quarter or semester, and others fall in love with their first endeavor and dive into special projects. The internship course at Providence is led by Alumnae Relations Coordinator, Candice Mejia ‘98.

Senior Provet, Kaitlyn Nadeau interned at the San Antonio Library teen services section during the first semester. Being at a city-funded community resource has really opened her eyes to what the Downtown public library does and has to offer the local community. She has been able to see firsthand the services offered, which include study sessions, access to electronic resources, a form of housing because some teens do not have a place to go or food to eat after school. She has been able to meet fellow teens and be an active listener. In November, she was tasked to create her own highlight section for the month. She selected her own books and decorated a space to celebrate the season. Mrs. Mejia shares, “This is very impactful because not only is she getting to express her interests and talents, but she has also been given a platform to be a positive force in other teens' lives. Kaitlyn is doing great things and is seeing firsthand how serving your community can be extremely rewarding.”

Great job, Kaitlyn! Course selections are coming soon. Make sure you plan for internship in your schedule!

Plans for CSW 2023

Provets earn awards for Top Essays

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded on October 11, 1890, during a time that was marked by a revival in patriotism and intense interest in the beginnings of the United States of America. Women felt the desire to express their patriotic feelings and were frustrated by their exclusion from men's organizations formed to perpetuate the memory of ancestors who fought to make this country free and independent. As a result, a group of pioneering women in the nation's capital formed their own organization and the Daughters of the American Revolution has carried the torch of patriotism ever since.

The DAR objectives are Historical - to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence; Educational - to carry out the injunction of Washington in his farewell address to the American people, "to promote, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge, thus developing an enlightened public opinion…"; and Patriotic - to cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom, to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty.

Every year DAR sponsors a Regional Essay Contest focused on the American Revolution for grades 5-12. This year eight 11th grade students participated. Their essays focused on a significant person that contributed to the American Revolution;
