Dear Member,

Happy New Year. I’m excited to share with you some details about the upcoming APOMA General Meeting during SPIE Photonics West 2023 in San Francisco, CA.

AGENDA

Fusion Ignition

In December 2022, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California announced that scientists at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved fusion ignition — creating more energy from fusion reactions than the energy used to start the process. The ignition is a monumental achievement and the first time it has ever been accomplished in a laboratory anywhere in the world. Hear from Tayyab Suratwala Ph.D. Program Director for Optics and Materials Science & Technology at Lawrence Livermore’s NIF, as he discusses the critical role of precision optics and technology in fusion ignition.

CHIPS and Science Act

Dr. Andrew Brown, Senior Director, Global Business Develpment at SPIE will discuss the appropriated $52.7 billion dollars in the CHIPS and Science Act. This act provides a historic investment into a wide gamut of scientific R&D, commercialization of leading-edge technologies, semiconductor manufacturing, tax credits, and workforce development. Learn more about the CHIPS and Science Act and what it means for optics manufacturing.
