UNGODLY ADVICE
________________
In studying the life of Solomon and his son Rehoboam, we see Solomon as a man who was given extreme wisdom from God and then pride and lust caused him to be misled into marrying pagan women. To satisfy these wives, he allowed their pagan gods to come into Israel. It was his downfall.
1 Kings 11:9 says, “And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice.” His sin caused the kingdom to be taken from him.
When he died, his son Rehoboam became king. He would be the fourth king of Israel. Jeroboam, an old enemy of his father’s came to Rehoboam to make peace. He had fled from Israel to Egypt while Solomon was king. He thought things would be better with Rehoboam than they had been with Solomon. He told Rehoboam that he and his followers in Israel would become his servants if the king would “lighten the yoke” from them.
Instead of consulting with godly older men that his father Solomon had trusted, Rehoboam listened to his younger unseasoned friends and took their counsel to make the “yoke” even heavier upon Jeroboam and his followers. By doing this he made an enemy with Jeroboam, which caused Israel to become a divided kingdom. Ten tribes sided with Jeroboam and formed their own northern kingdom.
From then on, there was war between the northern kingdom, which consisted of ten tribes and the southern kingdom which consisted of only two tribes (Judah, where Jerusalem was located and Benjamin).
By Solomon’s not listening to God when he took wives, and Rehoboam’s not listening to seasoned, godly counsellors when an enemy wanted peace, it cost both kings their kingdoms.
When we need counsel, we should always seek God and go to godly counsellors, so we are guided by the Spirit of God. When we turn to the world for advice, we can be sure that it will not give us the wisdom that godly counsellors give. It cost Rehoboam and Solomon their kingdoms, and it is guaranteed to cost us also, if we do not seek God for direction in our lives.
