Thank you to the residents that participated in the January Environmental & Maintenance Committee Meeting Thursday evening. Here is a recap of the agenda discussion items addressed by the committee.
Jim Eyerly provided a Maintenance Team Update to the committee.
• Construction has begun on the new Pro Shop. The Woodlake Maintenance Team will be building this structure as part of the SRC project.
• Christmas Tree recycling wrapped up. About 100 trees were sent through the chipper this year.
• Moss Creek. The team has been in contact with the Army Core of Engineers to correct the erosion areas. Will be lining the bank with material to slow down erosion as the solution is being explored.
• Christmas decorations have been taken down and stored for the season.

Agenda Items Discussed:
• The evergreen trees donated to the association from the Santa Event were planted at Rock Harbor on January 5.
• There was a request for Woodlake to assist in developing a Girl Scout project. The request was to create a Community Garden. This request has come up several times over the years. A Community Garden is not feasible as there is no "spare/vacant" areas in Woodlake to create one. The Committee discussed an alternate "garden" opportunity in the form of a "pollinator garden." This can be constructed in a common area and provide beauty as well as a home for pollinating insects. Committee member Cheralynn Potts agreed to lead this project.
• Discussion around the increased number of double-crested cormorants (a member of the cormorant family of water birds) inhabiting the islands in the reservoir took place noting the population is adversely impacting the vegetation on the islands. Methods to encourage the cormorants to leave the area were discussed and will be investigated. It was also noted that there is a population of Great Blue Herons that share the islands with the cormorants and suggested that whatever methods used to move the cormorants should not impact the herons.
• Documentation and removal of invasive plants in the common areas continues. Removal of these plants in the common areas will resume committee members reaching out to home owners that have property adjacent to the common areas, as they may need to enter their property to remove the plants in question.
• The last item on the agenda was the election of officers for the Environmental & Maintenance Committee. The committee proposed and approved the appointment of two Vice Chairs for this term. Cheralynn Potts and Larry Tipton will serve a Vice Chairs. Mike Wimsatt will serve as Secretary.
• In closing the committee noted that every other meeting will take place online. With that, the February meeting will take place virtually. It was also discussed about altering committee's schedule and possibly meeting every other month. This will be an agenda item in February.
