Dear LA Civil Rights Family,

Summer is almost here, and so is Juneteenth! This year, LA Civil Rights is co-hosting three public events to celebrate the June 19 holiday commemorating the official end of slavery in America. Please mark your calendar for Wednesday, June 19, to join us at one or all of the following events:

  • 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM - Reparations through an Intellectual Property Lens: LA Civil Rights Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) Series, in collaboration with the Langston Bar Association, will host discussions on reparations in the context of intellectual property at USC Gould School of Law, 699 W Exposition Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90089. RSVP required here.

  • 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM - 3rd Anniversary of KBLA Talk 1580 AM: This is a chance to learn about LA Civil Rights goals and programs, while also enjoying food, fun, and music with nation’s fastest-growing, Black-owned talk radio station at Kenneth Hahn Park, 4100 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90008.

We are honored to co-host these events and spread awareness about Juneteenth. For more information about the holiday and our RAC, check out this mini-doc created by one of our UCLA Interns, Aiden Western.

In other big news, I am so happy to congratulate Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson (CD8), who was unanimously elected by his colleagues to serve as LA's next Council President! In September, he will replace current Council President Paul Krekorian, who is completing his third term. We couldn't be more grateful for Krekorian's unwavering support of our mission and efforts since our department's establishment in 2020. Similarly, Harris-Dawson was instrumental in creating the LA Civil Rights Department. He supports the diversity and rich legacy of the City of Angels, and we are excited to congratulate him on his new position!

Keep the faith and keep the fight!

Pride Wrap-up: LA Is For Everyone

LA Civil Rights works year-round to create a more equitable and just Los Angeles, including for our LGBTQIA+ communities, and during Pride Month, we are proudly participating in events throughout LA with our commissioners, staff, volunteers, and community partners to advocate for an LA For All.

Our Human Relations Commission President Brittany McKinley sat down for a discussion with our Transgender Advisory Council (TAC) Commissioners Jazzmun Nichcala Crayton and Shane Ivan Nash to discuss the importance of pride and highlight some of TAC's work. Watch it here on Channel 35's LA This Week.

We kicked off the month with Mayor Karen Bass, Councilmember Tim McOsker (CD15), our Human Relations Commission, and TAC at a historic event. For the first time in City history, the Progress Pride flag was raised over Los Angeles City Hall for all to see. Watch the flag-raising event here.

Our momentum has not slowed down. LA Civil Rights proudly joined Mayor Karen Bass, Councilwoman Traci Park, and LA Fire Chief Kristen Crowley at the LA Pride Parade. Our staff, commissioners, family, and friends marched and danced through the streets of Hollywood, sending a clear message that LA is for Everyone! Special congratulations to Fire Chief Crowley, who served as the 2024 Community Grand Marshal.

This Monday, LA Civil Rights' TAC hosted the first-ever in-person TGI2+ Housing Resource Fair at the California Endowment. The fair provided valuable resources, support, and education for transgender individuals seeking safe, affordable housing options. Events like these are critical because people who identify as TGI2+ are often some of the most marginalized members of society.

Providing housing resources is part of Mayor Karen Bass' critical mission to address LA's homelessness crisis, which includes housing for Transgender Angelenos. We appreciate Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez (CD13) and Lourdes Castro Ramirez, Mayor Bass' Chief Housing and Homelessness Officer for attending the year's fair. We are also grateful to Councilwoman Traci Park (CD11) for sponsoring the event. If you or someone you know has encountered discrimination in private sector areas of commerce, education, employment, or housing, LACR's Civil Rights Enforcement Unit is here to help. Religious Pluralism Event

LA Civil Rights proudly hosted the ninth annual Day of Religious Pluralism, which was originally recognized by the City Council in 2015 officially acknowledging the core values of an inclusive Los Angeles.  The resolution was the result of years of multi-faith engagements, dialogues, and intentionality to build bridges among the vastly diverse religious landscape in Los Angeles. Thank you to the faith and civic leaders who inspired the resolution and continue to uplift the ideals of a pluralistic society. We are grateful to Councilmembers Yaroslavsky and Park, as well as the Aga Khan Council of the Western U.S for co-sponsoring this year’s event.

L.A. REPAIR Celebration

LA Civil Rights celebrated our community volunteers and partners, who made the L.A. REPAIR Participatory Budgeting Pilot Program possible over the last two years. Through numerous meetings and in-person events, these dedicated community members fostered a greater sense of equity and inclusion in the process of distributing $8.5 million to marginalized communities, and empowered their REPAIR Zones to have a direct say in how these public funds would be allocated. We are so grateful for their efforts to build bridges between the City and community to correct harms caused by institutional racism.

To mark the conclusion of the historic first phase of community participation, we celebrated with a luncheon at City Hall with remarks from Councilmember Curren Price (CD9), Deputy Mayor for Community Engagement Jared Rivera, and our partner in this work, the Participatory Budgeting Project.

Special thank you to Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson's office for hosting the event space.
