Steve: For those who do not consume gluten because you either have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, I apologize upfront that the following does not provide a miracle cure so you can eat wheat again. However, there are some interesting developments.
A first-of-its-kind study in Nutrients discovered a specific gut mucosa-associated microbiota fingerprint in celiac disease. Understanding how to combat these distinct microbiota with other beneficial microbiota such as akkermansia muciniphila may be key to blunting immune response.
The key finding of a study from Angewandte Chemie was a particular protein fragment formed in active celiac disease forms nanosized structures, called oligomers, and accumulates in gut epithelial cells. The presence of oligomers pry open the tightly closed gut lining, leading to the leaky gut syndrome.
A first-of-its-kind study from Medrxiv found there was a significant improvement over time in the The Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) Motivation and Pleasure (MAP) scale in schizophrenic patients following a gluten-free diet compared to those following a gluten-containing diet.
A study in Food and Function found that quercetin could play a crucial role in intervening in celiac pathogenesis, not only owing to its antioxidant properties, but also because it positively modulates immune cell function and intestinal microflora structure.
Patients with celiac disease have a twofold higher risk for developing any chronic liver disease than the general population, with the risk remaining elevated beyond 25 years after diagnosis. This is why tracking all liver-related blood markers are extra important for celiac patients. Of course, causing less stress on your liver and providing it with nourishing nutrients is paramount.
