PASTOR'S REFLECTION

THINGS I DON’T UNDERSTAND

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

For those of you who know me – this will come as no surprise to you …There are a lot of things I don’t understand.

Let me share a few of them with you.

CD’S: I don’t understand CD’s. When you look at one, you can’t see any songs on there, but when you put one in a player, you hear beautiful music. I don’t understand it, but I know it works!

In the same way, I don’t understand how He did it, but God put a song in my heart. When I am sad, there’s a song to cheer me up, and when I’m happy, there’s a song to praise Him. I don’t understand how He does it, but I know the song is there.

And…telephones: I really don’t understand how I can pick up a telephone and talk to someone thousands of miles away and they can talk to me and we can even see each other! Folks have tried to explain it, but I still don’t understand how that works – but I know it does!

And in the same say…I don’t understand prayer. I don’t understand how I can talk to God in Heaven and He can listen to me and talk to me – and listen and talk to all of the other millions of people on earth at the same time. I don’t understand, but I know it works.

Then, there’s medicine: I don’t understand how medicine works. When I take a pill, how does it know where to go and what to do when it gets there? I don’t know how it works, but I know that it does!

And I don’t understand how God can heal the deepest hurt and pain in my life. I don’t know how He does it, but I know He does!

Ok, now let’s talk about calculators…I don’t understand how I can push some buttons on a calculator and it will give me the answer to a complicated problem. I don’t understand it, but it works!

And, I don’t understand how God has all the answers to the problems of my life. I don’t understand it, but I know He does!

And, what about flashlights… Now I know this seems pretty simple, but I don’t understand flashlights. I know there’s a bulb and there are batteries, but I still don’t understand how, when I push the button, there is light. But, I know it happens!

And I don’t understand how – on the darkest days of my life – God is my light. I don’t understand it, but I know He lights every path I take!

Finally – there are remote controls…I really don’t understand how I can sit in my recliner and control my TV or VCR from all the way across the room. I can change channels, adjust the volume, pause, fast-forward or go in reverse. I don’t understand it, but I am in complete control!

And, I don’t understand how God can sit on His throne in heaven and control everything here on earth. I don’t understand it, but I know it’s true!

As we look forward to the future – in our personal lives or in the life of St. John’s…we don’t have to understand everything. Think about it – if we understood everything, why would we need faith? Let’s go forward into the future with the assurance that our God is with us every step of the way. We only have to have the faith to believe that He is in control. And what peace that gives us!.

Be sure to join us for worship on Sunday when J.T. Crockett will share “Love & Light: God’s True Nature”. See you then!

St John’s Ivyland needs your help in growing & sustaining our AV Ministry. Decide today to participate in this vital ministry this Fall!

Mission Soap Sacks

Here at St. John’s we live out our mission to love and serve others in many ways. The Soap Sack Ministry is beginning here at St. Johns and we would love your help. Soap sacks are crochet or knitted sacks made out of cotton yarn that hold a bar of soap. These sacks can be used as a wash cloth in addition to a way to store your soap.

We need your help in making these sacks! They are easy to make and take no time at all. Our VBS and Sunday School children will be helping us by collecting the bars of soap. At this time, sacks filled with soap will be donated to Diakon Ministries and Project Arch Street Service (PASS).

If you are interested or have any questions, please reach out to Roberta Nelson who will get you a packet of patterns. A collection bin will be near the Mission bulletin board for completed sacks.

Thank you!
