Mayor's Message:

In The Spirit of MLK

Mayor MappIG.jpg

Dear Jazz,

This past Monday, we celebrated a great man: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We know him as a man with a glorious dream, but we all dream. We all wish we lived in a better world. We all wish for injustices to be non-existent and intolerance to be unlearned. What made Dr. King one of the greatest men in modern history was the fact that no matter the violence, no matter the threats, no matter the consequences, he dared to dream and most of all, dared to work for it. He dared to speak, march, protest, and fight in a time where his vision for the world was considered a threat. Thanks to the work of Dr. King, we live in a better world – it’s far from perfect – but it is better. So, I ask you today, where do we go from here? What will we do with what Dr. King and the many that dared to work for his dream gifted us? Will we choose chaos or community?

Dr. King looked at hate in the eye and kept moving towards justice in order to build a better future for all of us. It was this hate that in the end, took him from us far too soon. Heartbreakingly, we still live in a world where racial prejudice persists, where women continue to be brutalized, and where poverty devastates communities. Dr. King’s dream is not yet reality, but if we chose community, it could one day be.

Dr. King once said, “We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now because I've been to the mountaintop... I've looked over and I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land." Dr. King’s dream lives on. It exists in our schools, in our streets, in our books, in the stories of our elders, and the hopes of our children. What we need is Dr. King’s dedication to work. A dream only dreamed can only serve so much. But when a dream is turned into action, what we have is a movement capable of anything.

We must choose community every day – but not just a community that tolerates who we are. We need a community that celebrates what makes us different, treasures our similarities, and cherishes our individual cultural backgrounds. We must be willing to have difficult conversations, march, speak, and stand up in the face of injustice and work towards something better. Together and only by working together, can we reach the mountaintop.

Mensaje Del Alcalde:

En El Espíritu de MLK

Queridx Jazz,

He mirado y he visto la tierra prometida.

UNION COUNTY:

Union County Announces 2023 Recycling Schedule for Scrap Metal, Personal Documents and Household Hazardous Waste

The Union County Board of County Commissioners advises residents that schedules for free countywide, drive-through recycling programs are now available online at ucnj.org/recycling. Along with two locations for scrap metal recycling, there will be traveling locations for secure paper shredding of personal documents, and for safe disposal of unwanted household chemicals and other potentially hazardous home and yard products.

“We encourage everyone in the whole Union County community to use our countywide drive-through recycling programs to recover valuable metals for recycling, prevent identity theft, and help keep hazardous products out of the environment,” said Union County Commissioner Chairman Sergio Granados. “I would also like to thank our municipal partners for helping to stem the tide of waste with local drop-off programs.”

Union County’s recycling programs are run by the Bureau of Recycling and Planning, and are for household use only. These events are drive-through only. Residents must arrive in a vehicle and remain in their vehicle while staff on site unloads the items.

THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY:

In 2023 State of the State Address, Governor Murphy Shares Vision for Shaping the "Next New Jersey"

Income-Eligible Children Can Now Obtain Medicaid Coverage in New Jersey Regardless of Immigration Status

MORRISTOWN – Governor Phil Murphy today highlighted expanded eligibility for the NJ FamilyCare health care coverage as part of his Administration’s efforts to provide all New Jersey children with health insurance through the “Cover All Kids” campaign. As of January 1, 2023, children under the age of 19 whose families meet income eligibility requirements are now able to obtain Medicaid coverage regardless of their immigration status.

NJ FamilyCare is the state’s publicly funded health insurance program that includes Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) recipients and is managed by the New Jersey Department of Human Services.

“Every child should have access to health care,” said Governor Murphy. “By helping more children get NJ FamilyCare coverage regardless of their immigration status, we are working to make New Jersey a fairer, more affordable place for all to live. This expanded eligibility is an important step in my Administration’s ongoing efforts to ensure every child in our state has access to the quality health insurance coverage they deserve.”

Phase 1 of the Cover All Kids campaign helped remove barriers and support connections to coverage by eliminating the 90-day waiting period for children to get coverage after enrolling in the New Jersey Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and eliminating premiums families would have paid for children enrolled in CHIP. Targeted mailings have been sent to key community partners, like food pantries, libraries, family success centers, local health departments, and others.

THE WHITE HOUSE:

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Efforts to Support Community Schools

WHITE HOUSE LOGO.png

Meeting the needs of the whole child is essential to help America’s students grow academically and improve their well-being. That’s why the Biden-Harris Administration is committed to increasing and supporting the adoption of community school models across the country.

Community schools meet the unique needs of the neighborhoods they serve by leveraging local non-profit, private sector, and public partnerships to bring wraparound services into school buildings, such as mental health supports, dental services, and assistance with shelter and nutrition. They operate with the assistance of school staff who coordinate with school administrators, stakeholders, and local organizations to deliver these services and more to students, their families, and members of the community. Research has shown that these schools contribute to increased student attendance, on-time grade progression, and high school graduation.

In the most recent bipartisan funding bill, the President secured $150 million for the Full-Service Community Schools program. This means the program is twice as large as last year and five times as large as when President Biden came into office.
