Roses covered the cafeteria, and the volunteer orchestral group played as students, families, and staff made their way into Mass. Many had bouquets of roses to offer at the Altar, and others had single roses they had purchased in support of the House of Peace.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12 annually in Mexico to celebrate the Virgin Mary. On this day, our community engages in a school-wide Mass, where students, staff, and their families are invited to celebrate the special day and offer roses to the Virgin Mary.

Unlike other school Masses, this one features a student-led skit. This year, the National Hispanic Honor Society volunteered to reenact the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s appearance to Juan Diego. Our student-led and run social justice club, Oportunidas Para Todos (OPT), sold roses in the days leading up to the mass for students to bring as an offering, and to raise money for a local domestic violence shelter, House of Peace. For every sale, $1 was donated to help the women and children at the shelter. The fundraiser generated over $200 for the shelter.

Cristo Rey New York emphasizes holistic human development. We focus on nurturing our students’ intellectual, social, spiritual, physical, and emotional growth. With the help of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and our other endorsing congregations, we are dedicated to shaping well-rounded individuals who are not only prepared for success in their studies but equipped to make meaningful contributions to the world.

Our juniors recently participated in a transformative offsite retreat, immersing themselves in activities focused on fostering peace—both within themselves and in the world. Through discussions, meditation, prayer, and skits, they deepened their understanding of the topic while strengthening their commitment to cultivating peace within their community. The day concluded with a Mass, where students had the opportunity to reflect with their peers on the world around them and explore how they can contribute to peace.

On College and Career Night, our juniors interacted with more than 30 volunteers from a variety of fields, who shared the educational and professional steps they have taken to establish fulfilling careers. The timing of this program was ideal, as this cohort of students is searching for colleges that will be the best fit.

An introduction to the fine arts offers students valuable creative experiences outside the classroom. CRNYHS’s after-school visual arts program enables students to work with professional instructors and practicing New York City artists. Additionally, thanks to the generosity of a donor, our freshmen were able to attend a Broadway show earlier this February to further immerse themselves in the arts.
