For the past several weeks, the weekly topics have covered the life of Jacob while he was in the land of Haran working for his uncle (and later father-in-law), Laban. God had met him on the way there and Jacob had promised that if God would be with him and keep him, give him bread to eat and clothing to put on, and that he came back to his father's house in peace, then the Lord would be his God. God was faithful and did bless Jacob while he was working for Laban, in spite of the fact that Laban tried to deceive him and changed his wages ten times. After Jacob's 11th son was born, God told him to return to the land of his fathers. Jacob left with his family and possessions while Laban was out shearing his sheep and thus Laban pursued him. Before Laban caught up with Jacob, God spoke to Laban telling him to speak neither good or bad to Jacob. The next topic brings out the fact that one of Laban's main reasons for coming after Jacob was because he felt Jacob had stolen his gods. Sadly, even though Laban had seen and recognized that God had blessed Jacob for many years, he still clung to his gods. In Psalm 86, David tells us, "Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord; nor are there any works like Your works. All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, and shall glorify Your name. For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God."
Praise the Lord that we can see his power even among His creation - and it exceeds anything man can imagine!
