Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce Hosted 2025 Mission Day in Austin

MISSION, TX - The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) proudly hosted the 2025 Mission Day in Austin on February 18, 2025. This annual event brought together business leaders, elected officials, and community advocates to engage with state legislators on key issues impacting Mission, Texas, and the greater Rio Grande Valley.

Mission Day in Austin was supported by esteemed sponsors and partners, including the City of Mission, Raise Your Hand Texas, the Mission Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Killam Development and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). These organizations played a crucial role in advancing legislative priorities that drive regional growth and prosperity.

The 2025 legislative priorities included:

  • Water Rights & Infrastructure: Advocating for collaboration with state and local agencies to secure sustainable water sources, safeguard long-term access, and secure funding for water infrastructure projects to meet the community’s growing needs while preventing external acquisition of local water rights.
  • Transportation Infrastructure: Seeking funding to enhance regional connectivity and improve mobility for businesses and residents.
  • Municipal Election Legislation: Supporting legislation to move the City of Mission’s municipal elections from May to November, reducing taxpayer costs, enhancing voter convenience, and increasing voter turnout.
  • Right-of-Way Permitting for Fiber Installation: Advocating for policies requiring right-of-way permitting to protect public interests while expanding broadband infrastructure.
  • Property Tax Relief: Supporting measures to reduce the tax burden on homeowners and businesses.
  • Job Creation & Workforce Development: Promoting initiatives that drive economic growth and workforce training opportunities.

The advocacy visit to the Texas State Capitol was an incredibly productive and inspiring day for the Mission delegation. A key highlight was the official recognition of Mission Day with Senate Resolution No. 104, honoring the city’s rich history, thriving economy, and contributions to Texas. Introduced by Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, a proud Mission native, the resolution underscored Mission’s significance:

"Mission is not only known as the home of the grapefruit—it was also my home growing up... a hub for tourism, home to incredible destinations like Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife, the National Butterfly Center, and La Lomita Chapel."

Additionally, Senator Hinojosa delivered a heartfelt proclamation on the Senate Floor, recognizing the Mission delegation’s efforts and emphasizing the importance of local voices in shaping state policy. The delegation also met with State Representatives Sergio Muñoz, Oscar Longoria, and Bobby Guerra, who welcomed them with a proclamation and recognition at the House of Representatives. Each representative took the time to discuss legislative priorities, share insights on upcoming policies, and explore opportunities for collaboration to benefit Mission and the Rio Grande Valley.

“Our goal was to ensure that the voices of Mission’s business community and residents were heard at the state level,” said Brenda Enriquez, President & CEO of the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce. “By working together with our partners and legislators, we advocated for policies that will drive economic development, enhance infrastructure, and improve the quality of life for our community.”

The day was filled with productive discussions, strategic planning, and a renewed sense of purpose. The GMCC delegation left the Capitol energized, knowing that their voices were heard and that they have strong allies in their efforts to create positive change in Mission.

Mission EDC, City of Mission Acquire Cimarron Club

Article by: Texas Border Business

MISSION, Texas (2-24-24) – The City of Mission and the Mission Economic Development Corporation are pleased to announce the acquisition of Cimarron Country Club, a longtime landmark and championship golf course that for decades was the center of the bi-national social scene.

After extensive negotiations with the former owners, the Kamel family, and the Homeowners Association of Cimarron, the Mission EDC has successfully purchased the 200-acre country club and golf course for $5 million. The City of Mission provided the funding for the purchase, and the City of Mission and Mission EDC will market the facility with the goal of promptly selling the property.

Recognizing its significance, the City of Mission began taking steps in April 2024 to acquire Cimarron and restore it to its previous illustrious condition with the goal of bringing back dining, golf, social functions and business events that were the core of country club’s functions.

Following its closure in August 2022, the property fell into decline, impacting residents and leaving a void for entertainment in the area. Acquisition and redevelopment of this major community asset will improve the Cimarron area, elevate quality of life and pair it with economic development efforts that have seen Mission’s retail sales taxes recently increase by record levels.

“Gaining control of such an important asset was absolutely critical to Mission,” Mayor Norie Gonzalez Garza said. “It has been an eyesore for years, and that was no longer acceptable. This now means we can move forward with a positive plan working with Cimarron residents, the City, the EDC, and potential buyers to bring back the country club we all knew and loved and promote economic development in the area.”

As part of its revitalization efforts, the Mission EDC will seek a third-party buyer to purchase the 6,821-yard par-72 Cimarron Country Club – designed by David Bennett in 1983 – and assume ownership and management. The buyer will be responsible for making improvements.

A Public Improvement District (PID), once created and funded by Cimarron residents, will work with the buyer and assist in the improvements allowed under the law. A PID is a designated area where the property owner within the PID can fund improvements. Until a third party acquires the property, the City will maintain the property.

Under the new ownership, the facility will remain a private country club. The City looks forward to collaborating with the Mission EDC and HOA to identify a buyer and keep the community informed throughout this process. Several inquiries for information have already been fielded.
