“Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

-Luke 8:50-

Jairus was a big wig in local society and a synagogue leader. He was wise, popular, and powerful.  Jairus was someone that everyone would listen to.  But Jarius was also a father, whose daughter was sick, VERY sick.  Like any father, Jairus desperately wanted his daughter to be healed.

We can only guess, but we do know a man like Jairus had all the connections.  Undoubtedly, his wife tried to help her, but that obviously didn’t work. Jairus, in his elevated position, would have contacted the most educated doctor in the region, but that didn’t work either.  His girl, his precious little girl was dying and there was nothing he could do about it.

Though he was a local leader he could not recruit the proper assistance.

Though he was financially secure, he could not pay for her to be healed.

Though he was powerful and popular, nobody could help him.

But Jairus had heard about a man who did miraculous things. Word was out that Jesus of Nazareth was saying things, and doing things only God himself could do.  So in his desperation, Jarius did something that no educated, upright, proper religious leader would do.  He tracked down Jesus of Nazareth, fell on his face, and begged him to help.  Saint Mark tells us Jairus pleaded earnestly with Jesus.

“My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” (Mark 5:23)

Jesus went with Jairus and did the miraculous.  Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead and Jairus and his wife were “astonished.”  There is a day when Jesus will raise us all from the dead to be with him forever.

Fathers, I know you are wise, I know you are talented, I know you are strong, I know you are tough, but only Jesus can save them from their sins and give them eternal life.

Thank you, Fathers, for leading your children in faith to Jesus so that they may be saved too.  Well done Brothers!

See you Sunday, I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
