Laziness is Next to Godliness?
There are four months of the year that are hard to figure out because the switch of the seasons happens in them. In March we move from Winter to Spring, September we move from Summer to Fall, and December we move from Fall to Winter. June is probably the hardest of the four for me. I think the reason is that there is so much change that happens during the month. We wait for school to let out, perhaps the first camping trip, the weather changes, and the desire to enter into summer laziness. I long for that summer slowness, that time to relax and enjoy what life has to offer. I wonder if it is time to reflect on the power of laziness - the health that can come from doing nothing.

Based on a recommendation from the Building & Property Committee, Council passed a motion to entertain a proposal from Harbour Homes regarding their request for a temporary shoring easement under our property. While Harbour Homes prepares their written proposal, Council will continue to pursue legal and insurance guidance and follow up with any engineering concerns. Once we have Harbour Homes’ proposal and Council is near completion of the discovery process, we do plan to hold an in-person meeting and a Zoom meeting with the membership to share information. This will occur prior to Council making a decision on the proposal.

About 100 Youth and Adults from the Seattle area (NWWA Synod) will be attending the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans. All of the local participants going to the Gathering are invited to attend this FUN Meet and Greet! Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee will also be at this gathering. Rinker Buck

A dry cleaner in Yankton, S.D., once told me that he had spied so many fussily costumed boaters from the banks of the nearby Missouri River that he’d grown weary of new arrivals. “People are recreating Lewis and Clark,” he said. “It happens here all the time.” He loved the river, for its waterfowl and promise of imaginative escape, but not always its thru-traveling flock, who, if not reprising the migration of previous generations, often seemed to be proselytizing for one thing or another: energy independence, say, or sobriety. “Some of these people are a little on their high horse, you know?” he said. To meet a waterborne voyager whose only cause was wanderlust: That was novel.
I thought of my conversation with the dry cleaner while reading Rinker Buck’s engaging “Life on the Mississippi: An Epic American Adventure,” which recounts the author’s 2,000-mile journey from Pittsburgh to New Orleans aboard a purpose-built wooden flatboat, like the ones used by Appalachian farmers in the decades after the Revolutionary War. His rotating crew includes a sometime Meriwether Lewis impersonator whom Buck loathes, not only for his casual racism and misogyny but for his pretension — archaic speech, suitcase bulging with 19th-century outfits.
Historical re-enactors, Buck writes, are “overdressed losers.” Readers of his previous book, “The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey,” will recognize the particular sensitivity. For that entertaining project, Buck traversed the old pioneer route by covered wagon, while railing against those purists who would lament the intrusions of asphalt and soft serve. The frontier was ever debased. Still, you might say that Buck is a re-enactor by another name: a travel writer, who delights in incongruity and in history’s rhymes.

We need your help to be ready for the next Quilt-A-Thon in October!
First Lutheran Quilters need people with sewing machines to assemble donated material into quilt tops and backs for Lutheran World Relief. We need 50 sets to have a Quilt-A-Thon in October. Please join us in the Fellowship Hall on Thursdays from 9:00 am to noon for instructions and materials for sewing at home. FLC Faith Partner Opportunities
Ongoing Community Food Drive: First Lutheran Church has partnered with the Northshore Nourishing Network to collect donations of non-perishable food items. Food donations can be dropped off at any time. Food is distributed to local food pantries, the Northshore Senior Center and to several school food banks on a weekly basis. Thank you for supporting the First Lutheran Food Drive and giving what you “CAN!”

World Environment Day
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations in 1972 and is celebrated annually on June 5th. Saudi Arabia will host this year’s global celebrations, supporting the slogan of “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” This slogan highlights land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. In the last 24 years (since 2000) the amount and length of droughts has increased by 29%. Within the next 26 years (by 2050), it’s estimated that 3/4 of the world’s population could be affected.
World Oceans Day 2024
Each year on June 8th we recognize that our oceans are in crisis due to the impacts of issues like overfishing, abandoned fishing nets and climate change. World Oceans Day’s message is to conserve our marine resources. The theme for 2024 is “Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate.” What can we do? Buying sustainable seafood is one what to help.
