August 23 - September 1, 2024 | |
I won’t pretend that our routine vestry meetings throughout the summer months are “exciting.” Routine business is routinely routine. But fall is right around the corner, and I’d like to give you a sneak peak into something we can all get excited about: stewardship!
Did the exclamation point get you enthused about stewardship? Not likely. Many of us would not agree on what stewardship is, let alone get excited about it. Four weeks ago when our stewardship committee began planning our fall giving campaign, we were somewhat daunted by the work ahead. However, as we delved deeper into the theology of stewardship, the reality of inviting our parish to give for the mission of the church suddenly became exciting.
The Episcopal Church defines stewardship as a personal response to God's generosity, and the use of God's gifts to do the work God is calling people to do. Saint Paul’s is already engaged in practices which reveal us to be responsive to God’s generosity and eager to use these gifts for God’s work in the world.
So let’s take a step farther. When we expand our theology of stewardship beyond the confines of an annual pledge drive, we can create a year-round culture of gratitude, and it is there where we’ll receive opportunities to trust in God’s indulgent provision. We’ll find ourselves more inclined to talk about giving. Our faith will be strengthened as we witness others’ generosity in giving. Expressing gratitude will become reflexive; feeling grateful will be inherent.
Friends, let us think deeply about our response to God’s generosity and the privilege of doing the work to which God calls us, and then let us expect to see even more of the abundance of God.
With gratitude and excitement,
Kitty Gordon
Saint Paul’s Vestry Theology of Stewardship
All that we are and all that we have come from God.
In gratitude we honor God by giving of ourselves and our gifts to care for the world.

Sunday Forum
The Epistle of James, led by Fr. Biddy
Sundays, 9:30 AM, The Berlin Room
Martin Luther famously called the Epistle of James an “epistle of straw” and put it in an appendix to his translation of the Bible. The book has often been overlooked and denigrated since. And yet of all the letters in the New Testament, it may be the closest to the content of Jesus’ teaching ministry. We’ll read it carefully to start the program year, using the most recent scholarship on James to understand it and apply it to our lives today.

Diocese of Georgia Listening Sessions
for Strategic Planning Process
August 25, 2-4 PM, The River Room
Saint Paul's is host for one of the listening sessions for the Diocese of Georgia's strategic plan. This process is primarily intended to help the people of the Diocese discern how the Holy Spirit is leading us into the future and then naming that shared vision in a clearly defined plan. In asking, “What does fidelity to Jesus look like in this moment?” we can confidently look to the Spirit to guide us into new ways of embodying our living hope.
All Episcopalians are invited to take their share in the counsels of the church and help chart the future of the diocese.
