One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

One Health Bill introduced into the Colombian Congress, Colombia, South America
Presented by Senator Marcos Daniel Pineda Garcia with 8 other Senators and 4 Representatives, this bill was built by the senator's legislative technical team in conjunction and consultation with One Health Colombia leadership. It would put the One Health approach into practice, proposing a law that emphasizes coordination, improved infrastructure and investment, stronger alliances, and a change in awareness through increased education to better prepare Colombia for the next pandemic. Co-creating One Health Workforce through Health system strengthening in Western India
The OHSSIN project has brought together over 150 governmental officials, developmental partners, and researchers in three Western Indian states to co-create One Health workshops to prioritize context-specific risks for emerging and epidemic-prone diseases. The project is funded by the German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA) through Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GiZ) Gmbh and is being implemented by the Centre for One Health Education Research and Development at the Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar, India, with support from IHPH, Bonn, Germany. Exhibit Remains Available for travel
Washington, D.C., USA, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Three point three million people viewed the OUTBREAK exhibit between its opening in March 2018 and closing in Oct 2022. To date, over 300 requests have been honored for the Do It Yourself (DiY) ‘pop-up’ version of the exhibit (from organizations in 55 countries and 47 US states and territories) and that option remains open indefinitely. The full physical exhibit has closed but you can see the Smithsonian’s own DiY 'pop-up' version established indefinitely in the Museum. The Selva Maya is a tropical forest region extending over Belize, northern Guatemala and southeastern Mexico. It is the most extensive tropical rainforest of Mesoamerica with ecological and environmental gradients that have resulted in over 20 ecosystems. The Alianza One Health Selva Maya is an interface between decision makers such as scientists, communities, and those who generate public policy. The aim is to put the One Health approach into practice in the Selva Maya and to provide a means for managing resources that enable rapid and appropriate response actions towards optimal health outcomes. The AOHSM is organized into working groups that address the factors that increase the risk of the emergence of diseases, epidemics or pandemics, in order to promote actions focused on the wellbeing of the communities of the Selva Maya. The ADI/ILA is directly derived from the peace movement through international law born in the United States of America at the end of the 19th century (1873). Its mandate is to work for the evolution of international law and to propose either new norms or an improvement of existing norms. “The purpose of this White Paper is to examine the One Health concept (also called ‘approach’ or ‘dimension’) from an international law and global governance perspective and to contribute to discussions on the integration of this term into the international legal system. It is largely based on interviews with twelve experts in the various domains related to One Health. While the One Health concept arose in the international discourse around fifteen years ago, most of the international community, including those working in the field of health law, had not heard of the term or had at least not paid much attention to it until recently. The COVID-19 pandemic single handedly changed all that, with the concept of One Health now receiving privileged attention within the draft pandemic treaty and International Health Regulations (IHR) reform discussions at the World Health Organization (WHO).”

Plastic pollution has become so endemic that it affects everything from the environment to animals, plants and humans. Here we are bringing a different focus: One Health, a multidimensional concept that takes into account animal, human, plant, and environmental interactions and impact….. This requires cross-sectoral collaboration between human and veterinary health experts, oceanographers, agricultural specialists, and private sector interests…… microplastics have been discovered in human blood, stool, and breast milk as well as in our lungs, livers, spleens, kidneys — even in the placentas of newborn babies. Recently four key UN agencies, WHO, FAO, WOAH, and UNEP, agreed on an operational definition of One Health and joined together for a “Call to Action.” If these technical organizations effectively collaborated in devising a strategy for containing the harmful fallout from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, it would be a major triumph. For the first time, administrative departments under the control of political government formed partnerships among human, animal, environmental, entomology, and microbiology experts to develop strategies. Other departments, such as transportation, solid waste management, fisheries, police, and education also participated in anti-dengue activities. This included the surveillance of larvicidal measures, elimination of potential breeding sites, and community mobilization campaigns. The general public was motivated to participate as volunteers, and the level of communication, coordination, and collaboration exemplify an ideal One Health project.

Understanding and Reducing Roadkills and the risks of COVID-19 transmission resulting from Animal-Vehicle Collisions on the Highways in south-western Rwanda
Brought forward by the Biodiversity Conservation Organization (BIOCOOR). Roadkills resulting from Animal-Vehicle collisions are threatening faunal biodiversity conservation in SW Rwanda parks. This escalating threat is putting the Park’s fauna in danger but has received virtually no attention. A proposed project seeks to reduce the causes of animal vehicle collisions and to protect the most commonly killed animals. It will also focus on educating and raising awareness among drivers on the impact of roads on the Park’s wildlife and will teach the communities how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 from people to animals and vice-versa. Microplastic pollution is altering the gut microbiomes of wild seabirds and that could be a warning sign for humans, researchers report. Scientists from McGill University in Montreal, along with colleagues from around the world, found that tiny bits of plastic present in the gastrointestinal system of seabirds have modified the gut's microbiome. Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is caused by a coronavirus, with a case fatality rate of 36% in humans. Dromedary camels are the reservoir host from which the virus sporadically spills over to humans. Human-to-human transmission has been observed in health care and, to a lesser extent, community settings. Since its first detection in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in mid-2012, MERS-CoV has been reported from 27 countries in the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, the United States of America, and Asia, with 2604 laboratory-confirmed cases and 936 associated deaths to date. It is on the WHO list of pathogens with epidemic potential, prioritized for research and development in emergency contexts. The zoonotic origin of MERS-CoV means that a One Health approach is key to tackling the virus. Infectious Diseases and Conservation Medicine in Wildlife
Hosted by the Wildlife Diseases Association. Dr Toshio Tsubota explored the incredibly diverse wildlife and ecology of Hokkaido through a conservation science lens and how this approach connects with One Health. His focus on EcoHealth showed what microbiomes (including pathogens) exist in wildlife and how they relate to wildlife ecology. This is particularly important given the closing gap between humans and wildlife, especially in urban areas, and the growing risk of exposure to pathogens in humans. His recent studies on tick-borne pathogens in Hokkaido wildlife, and the ongoing study on disease ecology, including host-vector-pathogen communications in Hokkaido brown bears and sika deer will help illustrate this. Scientific Day:
The One Health Approach in Democratic Republic of the Congo
Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Organized through a partnership between the One Health Platform of DRC and the University of Liège, Belgium. The DRC is a sensitive hot-spot when it comes to Global Health security. Outbreaks of diseases with high epidemic and pandemic potential are recurrent in this country. This event reflected current operationalization of the One Health approach in the DRC. This one-day event gathered experts and stakeholders involved in the implementation of the One Health approach in DRC in order to identify bottlenecks to intersectoral collaboration and come up with recommendations for a better operationalization of the One Health concept. Tuscon, Arizona. Hosted by One Life Epi Solutions at the Northwest YMCA of Tucson’s Healthy Kids Day event. Their booth featured their “Find the Germ” game that teaches youth about pathogens, fun animal facts, and awareness about potential zoonotic diseases in wildlife. Native wildflower seeds that are beneficial for birds and butterflies were given away. Parents and Youth were educated on the concept of One Health.

April 22, 2023 Webinar
The first of a 3 webinar series hosted by the Next Generation One Health Philippine Fellows Program. The discussions touched on human-wildlife interactions, such as human-wildlife conflict, the mechanisms of zoonotic disease transmission, and how anthropogenic activities can increase the risk of spillover events. It also explored how future risks can be mitigated through improvement of surveillance systems, bolstering the resilience of our healthcare systems, and improving enforcement of wildlife protection laws. The second episode was held June 5, 2023 entitled “Community Participation in Conservation and Sustainability.” (See above) The third episode will be hosted on August 28, 2023 and will tackle One Health in Policy and Governance. A walk in the woods can bring serenity and peace of mind. You can bring back souvenirs such as a beautiful leaf, or a pine cone. Sometimes your souvenir is less lovely – a tick. Dogs, cats, and even horses can suffer from tick bites and responsible pet owners regularly check their companions for these unwelcome parasites. Ticks can carry and transmit bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, Powassan virus, babesiosis, and erlichiosis. In this podcast Dr. Katie Chow explains why people need to keep an eye out for ticks, why simply clearing wildlife such as deer won’t help control ticks, and how climate change is helping ticks thrive in more regions of the world. https://tinyurl.com/38ux4j28

People were showing up at hospitals and clinics across the US with a rare and troubling strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa that carried a genetic change that made it resistant to even the strongest antibiotics usually used to treat it. It took a good deal of detective work, but the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health officials finally figured out the common source was eye drops. Dr. Maroya Walters, a CDC epidemiologist and commander in the US Public Health Service, explains how the team tracked down the source of the unusual outbreak, and how it demonstrates that superbugs know no borders.

Kasim Allel of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and University College London and colleagues showed that the more antibiotics were used in people, the higher the rates of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animals, and vice versa. But overuse is not the only culprit. Kasim’s team also found rates of antimicrobial resistance are worse in poorer countries. Sanitation and a lack of health care are both likely factors. Governments will have to do more to control antimicrobial resistance than simply limiting the use of these drugs. Listen as Kasim explains the many different factors that are driving the rise of drug-resistant superbugs.

The One Health EJP ARDIG project focused on examining the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the epidemiological units of humans, animals, food and the environment across six European countries.
