New year, new you?

Happy New Year! How is your New Year’s resolution going so far? And what do you think your chances are for sticking to it? Polls say they’re pretty good: Nearly three-quarters of Americans keep their New Year’s resolutions for at least part of the year. Interestingly, men generally self-report more success than women.

If you haven’t made a resolution for 2023 yet, check out CountryLiving’s list of goals that are actually achievable.

Why make a New Year’s resolution? For one thing: It might help you live longer. For example, did you know that switching to a plant-based diet can extend your life by 13 years?!

Whether you’ve resolved to quit smoking, eat healthier, save money, or exercise more, research indicates that you’re more likely to succeed if you focus on the positive. One study showed that participants who made approach-oriented (positive) New Year’s resolutions were 12% more successful than participants who made avoidance-oriented (negative) resolutions. And, according to an article in Psychology Today, pursuing avoidance-oriented goals leads to lower self-esteem and less satisfaction with life. So, forgive your failures and celebrate those wins! For a few more tips on how to keep your New Year’s resolution, check out this article from UAB Medicine.

For those of us hoping to shed a few pounds, there’s good and bad news. According to current research, in the two years following a successful diet, people typically regain more than half the weight they lost. But whether or not you gain back the weight, even temporary weight loss may improve your overall longevity. Scientists say one of the best ways to keep off those pounds is to make long-lasting improvements to your exercise habits. CBC News offers some tips on how to do that.
