Along with fire alarms, sprinkler systems, hood suppression systems and fire-rated doors, there is another fire protection feature that is easily overlooked.
Fire and smoke barrier walls and ceilings must be maintained the way they were installed. When properly maintained these walls aid in preventing the spread of smoke and fire throughout the building. When fire and smoke barriers and ceilings are penetrated, they must be properly sealed with approved materials that will maintain the original ratings of the barriers.
Fire and smoke barrier walls and ceilings must also be inspected by the building owner annually and the documentation available to the requesting authority having jurisdiction.
