I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Expansion Project

Lane Closures

Jan. 15-22

Motorists can expect alternating, single-lane closures on I-64 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the following locations:

  • I-64 east on the High Rise Bridge Jan. 16-19
  • I-64 east and west from Military Highway (exit 297) to Shell Road (approximate mile marker 295) Jan. 20


Continuous, single-lane closure on I-64 east from Great Bridge Boulevard through the High Rise Bridge beginning as early as 9 p.m. on Jan. 20 through 5 a.m. on Jan. 22.


Motorists can also expect overnight, single-lane closures with brief, intermittent stoppages (up to 20 minutes) in the following locations. Single-lane closures will begin as early as 7 p.m. with full stoppages to occur between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

  • I-64 west from George Washington Highway (exit 296) to Shell Road (approximate mile marker 295) Jan. 16-17
  • I-64 east at the I-464 interchange (exit 291) Jan. 17-19
  • I-64 west from the High Rise Bridge to Great Bridge Boulevard (exit 292) Jan. 20

Overnight closure of the I-64 east off-ramp to George Washington Highway south (exit 296B) Jan. 15-16 from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. 


Motorists should follow detour signs to Military Highway (exit 297) and take a right on George Washington Highway. 

Overnight closure of I-64 west off-ramp to George Washington Highway south (exit 296A) Jan. 16 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Motorists traveling on I-64 west should exit to Military Highway (exit 297) and follow the detour signs to take a right on George Washington Highway.

Overnight closure of I-64 west off-ramp to Battlefield Boulevard south (exit 290B) Jan. 18 from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.


Motorists traveling on I-64 west towards Virginia Beach should follow detour signs utilizing exit 290A and following the cloverleaf to access Battlefield Boulevard south.

Overnight closure of ramp from I-64 east to I-464 south (exit 291B) Jan. 18-20 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.


Motorists should use the detour listed below.


  • Take exit 291A to I-464 north
  • Take exit 2 to Military Highway
  • Take a left on Military Highway
  • Take the on-ramp to I-464 south

Overnight closure of Route 168 north/Chesapeake Expressway ramp to I-64 east (exit 1) Jan. 18-20 from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.


Motorists on Route 168/Chesapeake Expressway north should use the following detour to I-64 east:


  • Continue to I-464 north
  • Take exit 2 to Military Highway
  • Take a left on Military Highway
  • Take exit 1B to I-64 east

Overnight closure of on-ramp from George Washington Highway south to I-64 west Jan. 19-20 from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.


Motorists should continue on George Washington Highway south and follow detour signs to George Washington Highway north to access the ramp to I-64 west.

Overnight closure of the I-64 west off-ramp to Military Highway (exit 297) Jan. 20-21 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.


Motorists should continue on I-64 west to George Washington Highway (exit 296A) and follow detour signs to Military Highway.
