New to the One Health Conversation? Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

Time for a One Health Mpox ALERT!! And Call for Action
It isn't just sexual transmission
| |
Mpox cases are soaring in Africa – what must be done to prevent a global pandemic
August 13, 2024
Author: Cheryl Walter In: The Conversation
“....people may have thought that this is only a sexually transmitted disease. It’s not…..Now women and children are getting the virus, so communities need to be told what symptoms to look for and what action to take…..Because mpox is so similar to smallpox, we can use that vaccine. However there are limited stockpiles and we can’t manufacture smallpox vaccines quickly enough…..These measures and others need to be taken urgently to contain and to repress this epidemic before it potentially becomes a global pandemic.” https://tinyurl.com/bdfy3bvk (Image: US CDC Public Health Image Library)

Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBADs)
Technical Guidelines Released
With support from the University of Liverpool and WOAH, these Guidelines were prepared by the GBAD program with funding from the Gates Foundation and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. They detail the methods used to understand the economic burden of diseases in livestock and aquatic species. The Guide is a living document that will evolve as current GBADs methods are refined, as new methods are developed and as user needs are better understood. For policy makers and others they provide a foundation for disease burden assessment and insights into how estimates are derived and interpreted, presented in a form that is more accessible than academic papers and other GBADs technical outputs.

WOAH Releases Guidelines for Addressing
Disease Risks in Wildlife Trade
These guidelines were prepared in response to a “need to better manage risks from emerging diseases at the human–animal–environment interface, while protecting wildlife, through a One Health approach.” They are timely considering the celebration of World Zoonoses Day on July 6, a day that seeks to spread awareness of the impact of zoonotic diseases on humans and animals and how to prevent them. The guidelines are intended for authorities with a mandate related to animal health and welfare, public health, or wildlife management and trade. The Guidelines are also intended for a wide range of stakeholders in wildlife trade at local, sub-national, national, regional and international levels, including community-based groups, individuals, governmental organisations and non-governmental bodies. The very first bullet leads with One Health:
- “Use a One Health approach, working together across the human, animal and environmental health sectors to ensure all aspects are considered, including biodiversity conservation, animal welfare, national and international regulations on threatened and endangered species, and the reduction of risks to human and animal health.”

New!! From the UNEP: July 15, 2024
A global foresight report on planetary health and human wellbeing
The report calls for the world to pay heed and respond to a range of emerging challenges that could disrupt planetary health and wellbeing. It presents insights on eight critical global shifts that are accelerating the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity and nature loss and pollution and waste. Eighteen signals of change – identified by hundreds of global experts and distilled through regional and stakeholder consultations that included youth – offer a glimpse into potential disruptions, both positive and negative, that the world needs to keep a watching brief on. The report outlines how to create an enabling environment for better decision-making by creating a new social contract, embracing agile and adaptive governance, and increasing integrated accessible data and knowledge. The report offers a stark reminder of the interconnectedness and fragility of our systems in the 21st Century and warns that prioritizing short-term gains over anticipatory action and preparedness jeopardizes long-term prosperity and planetary health. https://tinyurl.com/mr2eadnn

The new Sustainable One Health Index (SOHI)
“The intended purpose of this work is to support bottom-up commitment. … We offer the SOHI-Index for further development........A new tri- or four-partite global agency which includes new representation from civil society, devoted to enhance a bottom-up approach and supported by governmental top-down agreement - if not remaining aspirational only - could address many of the problems identified by paving the ways for bottom-up commitment, starting from monitoring defined achievements of the SDGs at the local level. The SOHI-Index can fulfill the purpose to support this bottom-up commitment. Needed now is new thinking and a new entity to address the problems and opportunities we have described. For many years, the International Labor Organization (ILO) has functioned as a tripartite body representing government, labor, and public interests. This could be the template for a new One Health / Pandemic organization that would provide for community/civil society engagement. If governments, regional and international financial institutions, other donors, and global influencers get behind such an approach, it can happen.” https://tinyurl.com/bde76374

Can Bangladesh Show the World How to Integrate Microfinance and the One Health Concept Effectively?
August 16, 2024
Author: Richard Seifman In: IMPAKTER
Bangladesh has long had a community-based microfinance approach and a One Health Strategy Framework; its new Interim President, Muhammad Yunus, is the right person to do it and make it a reality......It is increasingly recognized that no single set of measures taken within one sector can adequately confront the prevalent and persistent problems of ill health, poverty, and social exclusion. Addressing global, community, and family needs with respect to human health will require cross-sectoral approaches, bringing to bear the enormous potential for the simultaneous achievement of both economic and health gains. Linking microfinance service delivery with broader health-related concerns and services is necessary albeit not easy.

Veterinarians at Los Angeles Zoo asked Natterson-Horowitz to consult on cases of great apes with cardiovascular conditions, then a lion with cardiac tamponade. "I learned so much from veterinarians, and I was humbled in a way that I would have thought impossible about how little I knew as a physician and how much I could learn," Natterson-Horowitz said.

The Veterinarians Preventing the Next Pandemic
August 14, 2024
Author: Rivka Galchen In: The New Yorker
Most new diseases have their origins in animals. So why aren’t we paying more attention to their health?........That animal health and human health and environmental health are continuous—that the damage we cause comes back for us—is a commonplace, but it doesn’t commonly structure our policies...."Herd health, flock health—that is something we [veterinarians] think about all the time, that is part of our training,” Slavinski said, of veterinarians and the perspective they bring to public health. She said that she likes the term “one health,” which is used by a number of different environmental and health organizations, as a way of thinking about the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the planet, all the more so now with climate change and biodiversity loss. “It’s such a valuable means for conveying a very complex concept,” she said. “I think in my world, in my role, it’s human-centric, in that it’s, like, What do we see in animals, in the environment, that we’re worried about then spilling over into humans? But it’s so important to know and value what’s happening in the animal and the environmental world.” Illustration by Kyle Ellingson. https://tinyurl.com/yc8peyn5

How U.S. farms could start a bird flu pandemic
August 21, 2024
Author: Apporva Mandavilli In: New York Times
“The virus is poised to become a permanent presence in cattle, raising the odds of an eventual outbreak among people. ‘Without a sharp pivot in state and federal policies, the bird flu virus that has bedeviled American farms is likely to find a firm foothold among dairy cattle, scientists are warning… ‘And that means bird flu may soon pose a permanent threat to other animals and to people…’ ” ‘Earlier this month, the state reported that H5N1 had also been diagnosed in six domestic cats, including two indoor cats with no direct exposure to the virus.
‘Yet fundamental questions about the outbreak remain unanswered.
‘Researchers do not know how many farms are being investigated for the virus, how many cows are infected in each state, how and how often the virus jumps into people and other animals, what the course of the illness is in people and animals and whether cows can be infected more than once. https://tinyurl.com/3rebsrye

Fighting Blind: There Remains Much We Don't Know About the H5N1 Outbreak
August 1, 2024
Author: Amesh Adalja In: MEDPAGE TODAY
Here are key questions we need to answer to prevent larger crises.
- Surveillance Gaps To adeptly manage an emerging infectious disease outbreak, situational awareness is a prerequisite -- and is precisely what is missing from this cattle-related outbreak.
-
Vaccination of Farm Workers Given the specific and unique threat faced by farm workers, the question of offering stockpiled H5N1 vaccines as protection is an important one to consider. Indeed, Finland has begunopens in a new tab or window the process.
- Vaccination of Cows and Poultry
- Trial Run … the current dairy cattle outbreak is a critical trial run -- a trial run that humans must succeed at to put in place the programs, the protocols, and the coordination necessary for when a less forgiving virus inevitably appears.

Bird flu cases among farm workers may be going undetected, a study suggests
July 31, 2024
Author: Amy Maxmen In: NPR Shots
“Researchers warn that the H5N1 bird flu virus has evolved to be more infectious to mammals, including humans, in the past couple of years. This drives home the need to keep an eye on what's happening as the outbreak spreads to dairy farms across the country….The bird flu virus appears to be spreading mainly through milk and milking equipment. But for the first time, researchers reported in May and July that it spread inefficiently through the air between a few laboratory ferrets kept inches apart. And in cattle experiments, some cows were infected by breathing in virus-laden microscopic droplets — the sort of thing that could happen if an infected cow was coughing in close proximity to another. https://tinyurl.com/yc6fw254

Microplastics are infiltrating brain tissue, studies show: ‘There’s nowhere left untouched’
“A growing body of scientific evidence shows that microplastics are accumulating in critical human organs, including the brain, leading researchers to call for more urgent actions to rein in plastic pollution…Studies have detected tiny shards and specks of plastics in human lungs, placentas, reproductive organs, livers, kidneys, knee and elbow joints, blood vessels and bone marrow…Given the research findings, “it is now imperative to declare a global emergency” to deal with plastic pollution…”

Bacterial Spores and Self-Destructing Plastic -
American Society for Microbiology’s Microbial Minutes
Video - Scientists have developed “self-destructing” plastic by incorporating spores of plastic-degrading bacteria into the plastic matrix.
- Humans produce 400 million tons of plastic every year, only 10% of which is recycled. Microbes can be harnessed to degrade some of this waste.
- Researchers mixed spores of Bacillus subtilis that had been experimentally evolved to withstand high temperatures into thermoplastic polyurethane (TUP), a type of commonly used plastic.
- When the spores germinate, the resulting vegetative cells degrade the TUP. After incubation for 5 months in compost, TUP harboring spores lost ~93% of its mass. Without spores, the TUP lost ~44% of its mass.
- The results highlight the potential of using spores to produce strong plastics (or other materials) that are also equipped with the “tools” for their own breakdown.

Sustainable Food Systems: Building Resilience Together
Hosted by AgriLinks, the online hub where agriculture, food security and development professionals connect, share and learn. As the world faces its largest food crisis in modern history, an unprecedented 345 million people’s lives are in danger from acute food insecurity. At the same time, global food production leads to deforestation, aquaculture, methane emissions, nitrous oxide and black carbon emissions, and food loss and waste all which also add to global emissions. To address these impacts society needs to transform food and agricultural systems to increase their resilience and adaptive capacity. To build resilience requires collaboration among a diverse range of stakeholders, each with unique perspectives and resources to the table. This webinar brought together policy makers, academic experts, and the private sector investors together to discuss opportunities to influence and build resilience for long term sustainability across agro-ecosystems.
