A MESSAGE FROM

Lower School Division Director

Mr. Nathan J. Mylin

Greetings, Lower School Families!

I'd like to start off by thanking all who joined us for CSS’s annual Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 11 in the Tutt Field House. In the weeks leading up to Veterans Day, Lower School students participated in a letter-writing project sponsored by "It’s a Military Child Life" in collaboration with "Veteran Last Patrol's Operation Holiday Salute." Together, these two organizations are attempting to deliver 60,000 letters to veterans in nursing homes, hospice care centers, and other locations this holiday season.

In addition, I'd like to give kudos to our Lower School Student Council, facilitated by 1st-grade teacher Ellen Crow, for organizing a wonderful spirit week aimed at having fun while celebrating the spirit of giving. Lower School students were encouraged to dress up each day not only to show their school spirit but also to remind them to bring in a canned good or non-perishable food item each day in support of the second-grade class's "Harvest of Love" food drive. Monday's "Pajamas and Stuffie Day," in particular, was a real hit among students of all ages!

By now, you should have received information from CSS's Band Director Brent Moorhead, and Performing Arts Teacher Emily Michelutti regarding the logistics of this event. Whether attending the concert for students Kindergarten through grade two or the performance for students grades 3-5, learn more and reserve your tickets online now at bit.ly/winter-22-concerts. Students will get ready with help from their teachers at school that afternoon.

Carline Reminders

Safety First

For our children's safety, please remember to always drive at speeds no faster than 10 mph when navigating through or around the Lower School carline, and please refrain from using any hand-held devices while doing so. Thank you in advance for abiding by these simple yet important carline safety practices.

Morning Drop-off: Giving Children Time to Be Organized

In general, you have been doing a great job getting your child(ren) to school on time, and I want to commend you for that! The first five or 10 minutes leading up to the official start of the school day are crucial for hanging up coats, organizing backpacks, reading the morning message, completing the first academic task of the day, etc. On the rare occasion that you find yourself running late and there are no adults outside at either Lower School academic building, please put your vehicle in park and walk your child into the building to be handed off to Dr. Hocate or their classroom teacher. There are some occasions, such as Veterans Day, where classes may be participating in an all-school event or assembly in another building, and an adult-to-adult hand-off is the best way to ensure your child's safety when arriving late.

Recess Reminders

Bundle Up: At CSS, We Love to Play Outside in the Winter

When the windchill is 10 degrees or above, Lower School students go outside to play for recess. Please send your child(ren) to school with a warm coat, two or three layers of clothes, a warm hat, insulated gloves, boots, and snow pants (optional) – and watch for reminders from your classroom teacher. Snowy days are much more fun for the kids when they have dressed appropriately for colder weather.

LOWER SCHOOL VOICES

This year's "Harvest of Love" food drive was organized by Katie Vincent and her 2nd Grade class as part of a study on service learning and the needs of the homeless and hungry in Colorado Springs. In true Experiential Education style, these second graders recently took a field trip to Colorado Springs' local Care and Share Food Bank. Check out their comments below:

Blyss B.: I like how we collected food to give to people who need it. There was so much food [at Care and Share Food Bank] that it was overflowing!

Gemma S.: I liked how they had so much food and it was free for people who need it. The food was stacked so high and it just kept going!

Zaïd T.: I loved how they told us that if I gave them $4, they could turn that into 25 lbs. of food. I also liked that the food was not just for homeless people, but for anyone who is hungry.
