Second Quarter 2023

Message from the President of the Board

Bruce K. Lyon, CSP, SMS, P.E., ARM, CHMM

There is unquestionable value in collaboration. By working together, sharing our experiences, and encouraging one another to excel, we push the boundaries of what is possible and move our profession forward.

With that in mind, we eagerly anticipate the third Research and Innovation Summit, hosted by BCSP and the BCSP Foundation next month in Indianapolis. With sessions centered around the latest developments and cutting-edge ideas, the R&I Summit is a "can't miss" event for forward-thinking safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) professionals. If you haven't already registered, it's not too late to join us. You will better yourself by attending, and the event will be better because of your presence.

Likewise, we have announced plans for the second Global Learning Summit to be held in May 2024. GLS is truly a one-of-a-kind opportunity in terms of quality and affordability with three days of virtual professional development and networking opportunities, all for only $25. More than 4,500 attendees from all around the world joined us for the first GLS in 2022. Mark your calendars now to be part of the 2024 edition.

Like all professions, ours continues to transform to meet the challenges of our time. New technologies, new systems, new practices. We are always striving to be better and to achieve more because we know our work has a direct impact on people’s lives.

The recent ASSP Safety23 Conference and Expo in San Antonio was a glowing reminder of the passion and talent that exist within our profession. It was especially rewarding to meet so many of our BCSP credential holders and to see you proudly displaying your credentials. Your achievements serve as an example to many who aspire to the level of professionalism you have earned through certification.

The future of SH&E practice is unquestionably bright, and we shape that future together. Thank you for all you do. Have a wonderful summer.

Confessions of a Safety Manager

How to Improve Your Safety Culture

Excerpt from BCSP.ORG guest blog by:

Erika Winning, CSP, CIT, CHMM

As I’ve met other safety professionals throughout the course of my career, I tend to think a lot of us have lost our way, forgetting the importance of building trust and relationships in our work. So often I hear safety professionals quote regulations and rules like they’re reading from a sacred text.

Not that knowing the rules is unimportant, but I can confidently say I’ve never been thanked for citing them to someone as part of making my case as to why a condition or behavior needed to change. I have, however, been thanked when I’ve successfully applied the regulations in a way that makes someone’s work easier and safer.

A mentor shared something with me as I was learning how to manage safety in the workplace. Successfully managing safety comes down to questions of aim, reason, and incentive.

  1. Aim – What do you need me to do?
  2. Reason – Why do you need me to do it
  3. Incentive – What’s in it for me? (This is perhaps the most elusive.)

In safety, I’ve seen so many of us walk away from these basics in favor of gimmicks or “flavors of the day.” I think it’s time for us to return to the basics and focus on addressing our co-workers’ essential questions.

If you can answer these questions, you have a head start on building a strong safety initiative and, in turn, improving safety culture.

ESG and the Safety Pro

What is this framework and how can you leverage it?

You likely already know it stands for environmental, social, and governance. So what exactly does that mean? It’s a new paradigm through which companies are being asked to view their priorities. It’s a different way of thinking about business, a more human-centered approach as opposed to one focused solely on the bottom line.

Companies are being encouraged to more thoroughly evaluate their responsibilities in these areas, some of which are already familiar to safety and health professionals. Through this new lens, they are asking questions like:

  • Environmental (E): Are we taking care of our natural resources? What are we doing to reduce emissions and prevent spills? How are we limiting physical waste and excess water usage
  • Social (S): Are we properly caring for our employees, customers, and anyone for whom we hold a duty of care? Are we treating our people equitably? Are we engaged with our community?
  • Governance (G): Do we manage our company in an ethical manner? Are we operating transparently? Do we have safeguards in place to prevent corruption?

By nature, at least a portion of ESG responsibilities often fall upon the safety professional. In theory, it may sound like a lot. In reality, safety professionals have been focused on many of these items for a long time.

“Safety and health is in ESG. We don’t have to ask to sit at any tables. We are there. We are the people side of sustainability, the social side of sustainability.”

— Kathy Seabrook, CSP, CFIOSH, EurOSHM, FASSP, Founder of Global Solutions Inc.
