From the Director

Greetings Madrone Trail Parents and Families,

Happy Michaelmas! Thank you to everyone who baked bread, made donations, volunteered and attended today’s Michaelmas celebration. It was the first one for lots of us, and the students really enjoyed the festivity.

Speaking of donations, thanks to the ongoing fundraising efforts of our community, this year we have been able to purchase a set of new folding chairs with carts. The students voted for the color blue. These will really be nice for our events on campus and will be so much easier for staff to move. As a result, we are in the process of discarding about 60 older chairs, best described as heavy metal and mauve. If you or anyone you know is interested in any of these, please stop by and take them. They will be staged near the office on Monday. We also still have the previously mentioned bike rack available, and more discarded treasures on the horizon.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

With Gratitude,

Andy Bracco

Michaelmas

We had a lovely Michaelmas celebration this afternoon that featured a play staring 2nd and 6th grade, some songs by the faculty and other grades, and ending with dragon bread and apple cider. We even had a cider press making fresh cider. The tables were decorated beautifully by all the classes and the weather was warm but beautiful. Here is some pictures of the dragon bread, which is always a highlight for the students to see. This year we had dragons of all shapes and sizes, baby dragons, dragon heads, dragon eggs, as well as a fire-breathing dragon! Kindergarten had their own celebration on Thursday, and it was sweet seeing them walking through campus in crowns and capes.

Farm to School Committee

Are you passionate about local food systems, gardening, and sustainability? Do you have ties to local farming and food production? Or simply a desire to contribute your talents to a worthy project? Yes?! Then please join us at the farm-to-school committee meeting on Tuesday, October 8th at 3:30 pm in Ms. Nancy's room.

The primary goal of the farm-to-school committee is to support our gardening education & nutrition programs while promoting local, sustainable agriculture through focused initiatives on and off campus. We will tour existing garden spaces on campus, assign committee roles, and agree on priority projects to address.

We hope to see you there!

Middle School Committee

Join us for the first Middle School Committee meeting of the year on Monday, September 30, at 6 pm at Wild River Pizza in Central Point. Our first order of business is planning the Halloween Dance on Wednesday, October 30.

Guidelines for Illness at School

With cold and flu season approaching here are some helpful guidelines to help determine if you should send your child to school:

Meal Program Update

Featured Menu Item: Beef (or White Bean) Stroganoff

A fungus phenomenon is taking the school by storm! Dozens of previous mushroom naysayers are now lining up on Fridays to receive delicious helpings of stroganoff! Featuring grass fed beef from Rusted Gate Farm in a savory sauce of mushrooms, onions, sour cream, and fresh herbs and spices served over whole wheat egg noodles… We should have called it “Comfort Food Friday”. Yum!

Specials September 30-October 4

Sandwich: Curried Chicken Salad (with raisins, celery, and sunflower seeds) with organic red leaf lettuce on Dave’s Killer bread

Soup: Cheeseburger Soup (onions, carrots, potatoes, cheesy broth and Rusted Gate grass fed beef), served with croutons or bread

A Note About Soup & Sandwich Specials

Sandwich specials each week are “while supplies last." They often feature items that are more costly or we don’t stock on a regular basis. Soups will run for the duration of the week and are made fresh from scratch 2-3 times per week.

Allergens & Ingredients

If you have not yet completed our allergen form, please take the time to do so, especially if your student has food allergies or dietary restrictions. The form is here. As far as ingredients are concerned, we are working on providing this information in a transparent way via our school website. In the meantime, if you have specific questions about ingredients, feel free to reach out to Chef Evan.

Snacks

We are currently serving fresh fruit, raisins, string cheese, and goldfish (whole wheat, no artificial flavors or colors). Believe it or not, the nutrition requirements for snacks are even stricter than for breakfast and lunch and we are limited by what is available through our food supplier. We plan on adding more choices when possible.

GENERAL PROGRAM INFO

If you missed the last updates with general information about the program, including snack policy and EZ app, please see the Friday Update from August 23.

Offerings from Nina Gallwey

Dear Parents and Teachers,

We are all being called to co-create containers of safety, regulation, and balance to support our children in these turbulent times. As I always say, “ What is good for children is good for humanity.” May you find the support you need for self-care and nourishment so you can be the fountainhead for your child(ren). May we come together in community to support each other as well.

Ohana Family Resources is here to be a touchstone for your journey with children. We can’t do this alone, and parenting/teaching is a practice. We are having to live deeply into the question rather than feeling that we have to have all the answers. Tap into one of our offerings for community, support and inspiration. In addition to morning coffees and workshops, I offer one-on-one parent coaching.

The one day workshop on October 5 is a wonderful deep dive into how to support the child under that age of 14 years to learn resilient rather than adaptive responses to challenges. In light of what is being asked of us all, this workshop is an informative, playful, and enriching gift to give to yourself with the trickle down being the gift it will be to your family or classroom. I just presented it in Eugene, Oregon to 52 teachers, and they were very grateful.

Visit the website for registration and more info on each event: ohanafamilyresources.com

Wishing you all the best for the new school year,

Nina
