San Francisco 49ers 36, Seattle Seahawks 24

San Francisco prevails in another Classic Niners-Seahawks Battle

"You can't tell the players without a scorecard." -- Herb Block, 1947

With so many new players needed due to injured starters, this game featured stellar performances from many relatively unknown commodities whose play helped the 49ers claim victory,

Let's start with rookie MALIK MUSTAPHA, whose interception helped the Niners grab an early 3-0 lead. DARRELL LUTER, JR. recovered a fumble of a 49er kickoff, which led to a 41-yard FG by kicker MATTHEW WRIGHT, in for Jake Moody and a 13-0 lead. Rookie CB RENARDO GREEN's interception blunted the Seahawk's momentum when S.F.'s lead was a tenuous 23-17. With no McCaffery, and Jordan Mason injured earlier in the game, rookie ISAAC GUERENDO and new 49er Patrick Taylor, Jr.'s runs had helped build a 23-3 lead before the euphoria ended with a 97-yard kickoff return by Seattle's Laviska Shenault and a Lockett TD had made it the tenuous 23-17.

KITTLEMANIA would follow, to make it 29-17, which sounded better than it felt, as professional Niner-killer, Tyler Lockett, scored the 60th TD of his career to make it 29-24. Guerendo's kick off return to the Seattle two-yard line enabled S.F. to run some clock, as Juszczyk finally scored from the six-yard line behind the block of another rookie, DOMINICK PUNI!

However, it wasn't all rookies! DEEBO SAMUEL Sr., and BROCK PURDY connected on a 76-yard pass/run which expanded a 3-0 lead to 10-0. Deebo became the first 49er in the "20-20 Club," (20 rushing touchdowns and 20 passing touchdowns). Without a doubt, Kittle was "The Man," with Brock Purdy, Brandon Aiyuk and "Mr. Clutch" Jauan Jennings, 'movin' and groovin' all game long, while a patchwork secondary with George Odum and Alligator Lenoir held steady and Nick Bosa made life miserable for the Seahawks all day.

The long list of injuries has allowed many new players to showcase their talents, but continued pressure on Purdy, questionable clock and play calls and some spotty special team play call for improvement. Nevertheless, this epic Battle is over, and San Francisco is now in First Place in the NL West. The guts and determination every player showed was emblematic of a team determined to win it all!

Brock Purdy finished 18-28, 255 yards, three TDs, No Interceptions, and a 129.3 QBR. Seattle QB Geno Smith finished 30-52, 312 yards, 1 TD and 2 interceptions and a 65.5 QBR.

A's Situation

Hits Heaven:

Try to Imagine

by Dave Newhouse

It’s late afternoon, cocktail time, at the Paradise Pub in heaven.

Bowie Kuhn is enjoying a martini at the bar when he feels a tap on his shoulder. He turns around to face his mortal enemy, Charles

O. Finley.

Finley: "Mind if I join you, Bowie?”

Kuhn: "Join me? Don’t you remember calling me a ‘village idiot' down below?”

Finley: "I did, and I’m sorry. I’ve changed a lot since then, especially here where sinners and jerks are frowned upon.”

Kuhn: "You made my life miserable as baseball commissioner, but I’m a forgiving man by nature, so sit down. I’ll even buy you a drink. What’s your preference?”

Finley: "A scotch and soda would be fine, and I appreciate the offer considering how difficult I was to deal with as owner of the Oakland A’s.”

Kuhn: "Difficult? You damn near were a daily nuisance for me.

Finley: "Did you say ‘damn?' You seem such a pious man, I can’t imagine you using such language.”

Kuhn: "I never did, truthfully, except in my dealings with you. The worst time, of course, was the day you tried to dismantle your dynasty by trading Rollie Fingers and Joe Rudi to Boston, and selling Vida Blue to the New York Yankees. I killed those deals, otherwise the A’s franchise would have been dead in Oakland.“

Finley: "You mean dead like now, with the A’s heading to Las Vegas after a few transitioning years in Sacramento?”

Kuhn: "Well, it hasn’t happened yet, and it might not, because the current A’s owner has the same moral compass as the man seated next to me.'

"Baseball is beautiful....the supreme performing art. It combines in perfect harmony the magnificent features of ballet, drama, art, and ingenuity" -- Bowie Kuhn, Commissioner of Baseball

Finley: "I know, I know, I tried to sell the A’s to Marvin Davis, who would have moved the team to Denver. But I was losing money as the A’s owner, and business is business, right?”

Kuhn: "The hell it is. There I go, swearing again. You still have that same influence on me. Your business sucked — oops! — in Oakland because the city hated you despite your success, and that’s why you drew one million in attendance just one season.”

Finley: "Three world championships in a row, and Oakland fans saw me as an ogre. If only I could go back and change my image, but it’s too late now."

Off in the corner, Pete Rose sits with his fellow Cincinnati Reds, Joe Morgan and Sparky Anderson, both enshrined in Cooperstown, which has denied Rose entrance. He is fighting off tears in their presence.

Kuhn: "You could change your image, Charlie. Like buy me a drink, you cheapskate. Your not paying the A’s players what they deserved after creating that dynasty was utter meanness and also just plain stupid.”

"If a manager of mine ever said someone was indispensable,

I'd fire him." -- Charles O. Finley, owner of the Oakland A's

Finley: "I know that now. Catfish Hunter and Sal Bando won’t even speak to me up here. Whenever I see them, they shift to another cloud. It’s the same thing with Vida Blue.”

Kuhn: ”Little wonder, the way you made Vida grovel during his early stardom. I hate to say it, but you were like a plantation owner.”

Finley: "I have a ton of regrets. But doesn’t there ever come a time to forgive and forget?”

Kuhn: "For some, I'd imagine. As for myself, I hold no malice toward you. But I try not in life to be spiteful. And so these drinks are on me.”

Babe Ruth bursts into the pub shouting, “The outrageous money they're paying ballplayers these days, kiddos, why they’d have to pay me one hundred million a season. And all I’d have to do is hit, no pitching or playing the outfield.”

Finley: "Reggie Jackson was my Bambino, only Reggie thought he was better than the Babe.”

Kuhn: "He WAS your Bambino, and you traded him, too. I should have killed that deal also, but I let it go."

Reggie Jackson was a two-time World Series MVP

in 1973 and 1977

Finley: "I sure gave you some sleepless nights, didn’t I? What if I still were the A’s owner and you still were commissioner?”

Kuhn: "Heaven forbid. What did I just utter? I apologize, but John Fisher is you without a pulpit as A's owner. Why if I were, indeed, commissioner today, I’d do….”

Finley: "Do what? Every major league owner voted for the A’s to move to Las Vegas. You’d be powerless to stop that.”

Kuhn: "Powerless? You mean like the current commissioner? Rob Manfred is nothing more than a play toy of the owners. If I were commissioner today, Fisher would be hearing from me. I’d be fighting for Oakland, just like I did with you.”

Three men get up to leave the bar -- Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda — all three with Giant smiles and their arms around one another.

Finley: "I have a confession, Bowie. You were an excellent commissioner, and what you did to me, I had it coming."

Kuhn: "Well, heaven help me. Obviously it has helped you, Charlie. Say, won’t you join me for dinner? They’re serving celestial crab tonight. I hear it’s divine."

Oakland Ballers

Oakland Ballers invite fan investors to apply for a newly created

Board position

(Oakland, California)—In the spirit of building a new model for how sports teams and fans build value together, the Oakland Ballers will include a fan as an elected member of the team’s corporate board. This is a first for a US-based sports team and reflects the Baller’s commitment to reimagine the relationship between ownership and fans. Earlier this year, over 2,000 Ballers fans contributed to the team’s crowdfunding efforts. Those same fan owners, regardless of dollar amount contributed, were invited to apply to become a Board Member to help make key strategic decisions for the team.

We set out to build a team that centers fansA Board position elected by fans, representing fans, is a key component of our unique sports ownership model. This is another step in the direction of showing how the Ballers are truly by Oakland and for Oakland in a very tangible sense. I don’t think any other sports team across the nation has done something like this. We are stoked to be the first.”  said Bryan Carmel, co-founder of the Oakland Ballers.

To be eligible, applicants must be a fan owner, and a US citizen. They are expected to attend quarterly board meetings and suggest proposals to strengthen the experience for fans and also innovate on the game of baseball. Interested candidates should complete the application survey sent to all current fan owners.

“We’ve said it before and we will say it again - our fans are our owners. Our fans are our everything! And we need real collaboration if we want to see the Ballers succeed long term in Oakland. From providing input on the team’s marketing strategy, season ticket offerings, and key front office hires, this position is a historic opportunity to have a real say in team management. We are so excited to see who the fans pick to sit on our Board, and how they can help shape the future of the team.” said Paul Freedman, co-founder of the Oakland Ballers

In the coming weeks, The Ballers will choose up to 10 finalists of the submitted applications. After that, the fans will have full control in choosing the Board member by placing their votes. Top two candidates will be voted on in early December.

Roots Fail to Score in Sixth of Last Seven as Oakland Falls at Home to Phoenix Rising FC 0-1

Oakland failed to score once again on Saturday night in the East Bay, conceding all three points to visiting Phoenix Rising FC in an 0-1 loss.

Though there was little fanfare in the first half in terms of stats, Roots finally looked like a team playing with a purpose.

Despite this, it was the visiting side with the best scoring opportunity through the first 45 when in the 27th minute a Phoenix header on a rebound looked destined to float under the crossbar. But Roots keeper Paul “The Wall” Blanchette once again earned his nickname with an acrobatic leap behind him to punch the ball away from danger at the last moment.

After the break, Phoenix looked to take over the game. In the 55th minute, they scored the contest's only goal after Rising’s Emil Cuello worked his way to Oakland’s back line and chipped a short cross in front of the net, finding an open Tomás Ángel who finished the easy header to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Roots might have looked better on the field, but their scoring woes continued. Oakland failed to put a notch in the goal column for the sixth time in their last seven games and skittered to the 90 minute mark still trailing by one.

Roots have two remaining contests left in the USL Championship regular season, and the playoff push intensifies with tonight's loss. The squad will now head on the road to face Las Vegas Lights FC on Oct. 19th before returning home for their final regular season match versus Birmingham Legion FC on Oct. 26th.

George Blanda -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee

I met Oakland Raiders George Blanda at a sports collectors show back in the 1980s. He had some nice stories to tell and was very friendly to all his fans. He played in the NFL for 26 seasons and retired at 48 years old.

Winning Losers -- Losing Winners

Baseball is so much about stats. 100-game winning seasons are not rare, but the 100-win threshold remains the hallmark of the best teams in a given season.

Wikipedia provides a list of 100 regular season game winners and how they performed in the post season. Wikipedia does not have a list for 100 regular season game losing teams but says they would post one if someone wanted to put one together.

There were no 100 game winners this season. Three teams lost 100 games or more. The Marlins lost 100, the Rockies 101 and the White Sox lost 121! The White Sox have the fifth worst season winning percentage.

What's the question? What was the worst team to ever win a World Series? Big hint: The year they did it, they were the National League Central champions.

Newsletter, Image, Likeness Vol. 101: Judge Wilken Rubberstamps Clarified Proposed House-NCAA Settlement. What's Next?

by Darren Heitner, Esq.

Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

I didn't expect Judge Claudia Wilken to issue preliminary approval of a slightly modified proposed settlement agreement to end the House/Hubbard/Carter v. NCAA NIL-related antitrust cases, but that happened earlier this week. It followed what I believed to be powerful and appropriate criticisms voiced by Judge Wilken during a hearing after the initial proposed settlement agreement was filed. I thought that Judge Wilken would find the "clarifications" from counsel to fall well short, but alas I was wrong.

Judge Wilken's preliminary approval isn't the end of the road for these cases. The plaintiffs' lawyers will not instantly receive wires of hundreds of millions of dollars. There will still be a chance for objectors to be heard. Even if the settlement does become effective and binding, the expectation is that there will continue to be lawsuits filed against the NCAA and, instead of the NCAA's goal of eradicating all such litigation, absent Congressional intervention (and I have heard nothing to believe it's coming), the result could be an uptick in claims.

Additionally, these matters could make their way to the Ninth Circuit on appeal, where the brokered agreement may receive more questions and criticisms, with judges who are less inclined to give the lawyers what they want. This will undoubtedly become a very lengthy process and it is one that we have become accustomed to in the world of litigation involving the NCAA. What does it mean for the potential of revenue sharing in the form of pay-for-play that schools are gearing up for as soon as the start of Fall 2025? It's too soon to tell. But it remains a comedy that the NCAA pretends these proposed future payments flowing from schools to players are "real NIL" while payments from boosters/collectives to players are "fake NIL" and should be scrutinized and trounced.

The St. Louis Cardinals did it with an 83-78 record in 2006. I guess they had a make-up game that didn't need to be played. Champs or Chumps provides the answer and a few other interesting loser factoids.

Comeback Falls Just Short At

No. 22 Pittsburgh

Bears Drop Defensive Battle to Panthers, 17-15

PITTSBURGH – The California football team held No. 22 Pittsburgh's high-powered offense scoreless for nearly three quarters but fell just short in a 17-15 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Acrisure Stadium.

The Panthers converted a field goal to take a 17-6 lead with 10:04 remaining in the second quarter and didn't score again. The Golden Bears (3-3, 0-3 ACC) got a 39-yard field goal by Ryan Coe midway through the second quarter and 19-yard touchdown catch by tight end Jack Endries early in the fourth period to trim the deficit to 17-15 but couldn't take the lead.

Cal hurt itself with 12 penalties for 110 yards and a handful of other untimely mistakes.

"There might be some teams that are good enough to have self-inflicted wounds – I'm not sure you ever go through a game perfectly," Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox said. "But we don't have the margin for error to play bad football from time to time and expect to win against a Top 25 team. Nobody feels sorry for us. Those are things we have to fix. If we do that, than we can win these one-score games."

Cal's three losses this season are by a combined eight points.

Notre Dame (5-1) shut down Stanford’s offense and posted eight tackles for loss, four quarterback sacks and a lost fumble. The Fighting Irish also stopped Stanford three times on fourth-down attempts.

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. "The Yankee Way," Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's foreword, is "full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competition, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods." By Charlie Silvera with Dave Newhouse (Author).
