"New Books At Gunter Library"

Written by experts in shark biology, this book examines technologies such as autonomous vehicle tracking, underwater video approaches, molecular genetics techniques, and accelerometry, among many others.

Award-winning nature and science writer Erich Hoyt gives readers a glimpse of the amazing variety of creatures in the ocean’s deepest parts. Weaving together details from the latest scientific research about sea creatures of all different shapes and sizes, Hoyt embarks on a magical journey roaming across the abyssal plains and descending into deep-sea trenches more than 20,000 feet down.

Humankind’s fascination with the animal kingdom began as a matter of survival – differentiating the edible from the toxic, ferocious, and tractable. Since then, our compulsion to catalogue wildlife has played a key role in growing our understanding of the planet and ourselves, inspiring religious beliefs and evolving scientific theories. The book unveils wild truths and even wilder myths about animals, as perpetuated by zoologists – revealing how much more there is to learn and unlearn.

This second edition of Zoo and Aquarium History takes the reader on a journey through the transition of private collections to menageries, zoos, zoological gardens, and more recently conservation centers and sanctuaries.

This book highlights best practices in climate change education through the analysis of a rich collection of case studies that showcase educational programs across the United States.

This book acts as a "how-to" guide in the geology, geomorphology, anthropology, and archaeology of these devastating phenomena. It draws on examples from around the world and includes numerous personal accounts of field and laboratory experiences.

Statistical Rethinking: A Bayesian Course with Examples in R and Stan builds your knowledge of and confidence in making inferences from data. Reflecting the need for scripting in today's model-based statistics, the book pushes you to perform step-by-step calculations that are usually automated.

Sandy beaches represent some of the most dynamic environments on Earth and examining their morphodynamic behavior over different temporal and spatial scales is challenging, relying on multidisciplinary approaches and techniques. Sandy Beach Morphodynamics brings together the latest research on beach systems and their morphodynamics and the ways in which they are studied in 29 chapters that review the full spectrum of beach morphodynamics.

Bayesian Networks: With Examples in R introduces Bayesian networks using a hands-on approach. Simple yet meaningful examples in R illustrate each step of the modelling process. The examples start from the simplest notions and gradually increase in complexity. The authors also distinguish the probabilistic models from their estimation with data sets.

Resources for Writing

Two new books purchased recently join the small collection of writing resources for graduate students and others at Gunter Library. The two books are Stephen B. Heard’s The Scientist’s Guide to Writing second edition https://usm.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01USM_INST/dvterf/alma991014487541605566 and the ninth edition of the classic by Gastel and Day How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper https://usm.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01USM_INST/dvterf/alma991014487541705566 Other university resources for writing help include the Writing Center in Cook Library in Hattiesburg which is open to all USM students: https://www.usm.edu/writing-center/index.php and the Academic Success Center which is located at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach: https://www.usm.edu/gulf-park-academic-success-center/index.php

Meet Gunter Library's

Summer Assistants for Session II

Katy Cramblit

My name is Katy Cramblit and I go to Northwest Missouri State University. I'm a Marine Biology and Wildlife Ecology double major. I enjoy reading, swimming, and hanging out with friends. The Summer Field Program has been a great experience. I've had so much fun going to the barrier islands and getting to meet some amazing people. My favorite experience was going snorkeling in Florida. Fun fact about me, I am scuba certified.

Ally Matheny

Hey, I'm Ally! I grew up in Kailua, Hawai'i, but now live with my parents, younger brother and dog in Peachtree City, Georgia. I go to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee majoring in biology with an emphasis in marine biology and a double minor in social media management and environmental science. In my free time I love being outside, reading, working out and spending time with friends and Jesus. My favorite part of the Summer Field Program has been the wide variety of animals I've been able to see and study!

Gunter Library Is a Climate Resilience Hub

This Spring Gunter Library became Mississippi’s first and only Climate Resilience Hub. As a Hub, Gunter Library is an “Engagement Center” which means it provides resources and information about preparation for extreme weather events. Because Gunter Library has sponsored and hosted three Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training sessions since 2008 with over forty GCRL employees and community members certified, becoming a Hub made sense. The only requirements are to display the Hub decal, provide climate/emergency preparedness information to library users, and host one climate preparedness program a year. In June Gunter Library hosted a Pop-In sea level rise training session with PLACE: SLR < https://placeslr.org/> and the Ocean Springs Environmental Alliance. Over the last decade the GCRL Science Café hosted by Gunter Library has held many programs that highlight climate change and sea level rise. For more information about CREW and other Climate Resilience Hubs follow this link: https://www.climatecrew.org

Cook Library Visit

In June five new employees from Cook Library in Hattiesburg traveled with Melissa Brooks, Head of Technical Services, to tour the Gulf Coast Library at the Gulf Park campus and the Gunter Library.

North Bay Civitan Club 14th Annual

Teddy Bear Collection

Gunter Library is partnering with the North Bay Civitan Club to be a collection site for its 14th annual Bears on Patrol charitable collection drive. This is the 6th year that Gunter Library has hosted a collection box for teddy bears. This year the bears are being presented to Harrison County Fire Services. The bear collection celebrates National Teddy Bear Day on September 9th; recognizes North Bay Civitans anniversary on September 10; and remembers all first responder heroes of September 11th. Gunter Library accepts new and gently used teddy bears until the end of the day on Friday, September 8thwww.facebook.northbaycivitan

New Employees at GCRL

Sarah Faruque

Hello, my name is Sarah. I recently started working as a Marine Education Specialist at the Marine Education Center (MEC).

I received a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental Engineering and a Master’s in water resources development. Before joining MEC, I worked at different universities, NGOs, and schools, collaborated with colleagues from various disciplines and cultural backgrounds, and built my teaching, research, communication, and administrative capabilities. I am excited to bring these attributes to MEC to advance and disseminate knowledge through educating and training diverse audiences, developing new educational activities and materials, and maintaining liaison with various stakeholders.

Ashley Jefferson

The new COA Finance Coordinator is Ashley Jefferson, from Biloxi. She is a graduate of Faulkner University and a lifelong resident of the Gulf Coast. She has a business services and management background, with proven experience overseeing financial operations.

Brandon Schmid

Brandon is our new Assistant Procurement Coordinator. Brandon discovered our campus when he participated in the 2006 Hurricane Bowl as a team member from Poplarville High School. He came to us from the Gulf Park campus where he served as Access Services Financial Coordinator at Gulf Coast Library. He holds degrees in business administration, marketing, and interdisciplinary studies (BS) and Logistics, Trade, & Transportation (MS) and is certified as a Maritime Port Executive through the International Association of Port Executives. When not supporting research, education, and service at GCRL as a procurement officer, he is starting a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing human rights to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He has spoken on this topic while researching companies that have the goal of developing AGI such as OpenAI and Google and tracking their development. He believes “that consciousness should be treated fairly whether it is biological or mechanical."
