Volume XIII | January 2022

“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward."Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Message from the Associate Director

"As we return from winter break and the holidays, COVID continues to be a concern and has affected our ability to do things in person from the start. Do not lose hope! As always, the safety and health of all our stakeholders is a priority, but we have been here before, and we have learned and adapted to the circumstances. I do understand that it could be exhausting, but I have a feeling we will be doing more in-person work sooner rather than later. Glad to see you back!"

Miguel A. Colón, Associate Director of Community Outreach

What We've Been Up To

MLK Day of Service: Honoring a Legacy of Advocacy for Civil Rights

Campus Wide Initiatives kicked off the semester with a very successful MLK Day of Service! Participants worked hard to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of making the world a more equitable place. On behalf of United Way, volunteers recorded audiobooks for children and created handmade cards. Volunteers also attended educational panels on the topics of environmental racism, the incarceration system, and racism as a public health crisis. These service activities and informative guest speakers inspired powerful dialogues about continuing Dr. King's fight for social justice in our service, education, and advocacy today.

Yasmina Lingane, Program Director of Campus Wide Initiatives, states, "Our spring semester goal is to get students on campus to interact and have vast conversations that spark ideas and change within our community. I am excited to see what this semester brings us. We also hope to collaborate with other clubs on campus, both within Community Outreach and outside of it!"

Alumni Spotlight

Carly Malesky

Class of 2021

"It was exciting to see the campers engaged in learning how blood flows through the heart, encouraging me to recruit more volunteers to gain meaningful insight into the lives and capabilities of those Horizons serves."

Carly graduated from UConn this past May with a dual degree in physiology and neurobiology and psychology, and a minor in neuroscience. During her freshman and sophomore years, she volunteered with Camp Horizons, and in her junior year, she became Program Director. One of her favorite lessons she led at Camp Horizons focused on cardiac health.

Currently, Carly is a first-year medical student at UConn continuing her passion for disability advocacy on the board of disabilities interest group. She is also involved with the Urban Service Track and has been collaborating with senior centers in Hartford to provide education on the COVID vaccine and resources for testing.

Carly reflects that she has CO to thank for encouraging her growth as a leader in her community and providing her with a deeper understanding of the impact of her service. When not volunteering, Carly likes eating a ton of ice cream ("even if it means postponing a staff meeting with Erin") and staying active enough to balance it all out. She also loves hiking and being by the beach.
