J Pony Allen  '... Ampersand Anon'

  • March 2 - April 1, 2023
  • Opening Reception: Thursday, March 2, 6-8 pm

This body of work examines and explores the delicious friction between organic growth and manufactured disruption. Inspired by discoveries of bush plane wreckage on barren high tundra, intrusive thoughts, F250s abandoned in woodlands, Darth Vader's paternal admission, irritated molluscs birthing nacreous gems, and stick framed barns caved in by giant's feet; these paintings are, in essence, bootleg interior & exterior landscapes. Like unauthorized recordings of Rock Gods, their authenticity is questionable but the spirit of fanaticism is earnest.

Mary Ann Rolloff

Cream & Amber

1605 Mainstreet

Artist Statement: My goal in painting is to capture the spirit of the natural landscape. I work in oil and sometimes cold wax on canvas, board, or paper. I usually start with inspiration from a photo of my own, a photo from another source, a memory, or some combination.

I most enjoy the early stages of a painting. I love the blending of the early colors to create the atmosphere that will pervade the finished painting. I am not a detail painter or an accomplished illustrator; I am a painter who wants to produce beauty.

My landscape paintings, including the nearly abstract ones, ask the viewer to fill in a layer of personal reference and possibility. I believe there is a universal comfort in the visual poetry of landscape painting.

The Dot Project

Hopkins Open Circle Adult Day Services & Glen Lake Elementary School Students

This community spotlight exhibition will be on view through March 6, 2023 concurrently in our Member Spotlight area at Hopkins Center for the Arts and at the Activity Center.

For this intergenerational art collection, Hopkins Glen Lake Elementary School invited the members of Hopkins Open Circle Adult Day Services to create a series of dots inspired by the book “The Dot” by Peter H Reynolds. 1st and 2nd grade students then received the dots back and altered them to create a beautiful and sentimental end result.

Open Circle serves a population of members who are older adults or seniors navigating a variety of situations, like social isolation, dementia, and other neurocognitive or developmental diagnoses. The participating members included a couple important or fun parts of their identity along with their dots to give an idea of who they are to the students. The students then interpreted the dots and words from the members into a brand new piece of work.

Through this process, the students were able to utilize an open mindset as they learned to bring new meaning and highlighting existing intent of artwork made by individuals they had never even met. The Open Circle members were able to embrace a new way of making art through exploring their inner child while connecting and trusting in a new generation.

As the audience, we invite you to let your inner child explore these drawings with wonder and playfulness. We also encourage you to listen to “The Dot” story narrated by the Glen Lake Elementary students in the video here:

Ken Herren

HCA Member Spotlight Artist at Morrie's Minnetonka Subaru

Born in Montana and raised in California, Ken Herren’s early artistic influences came from his mother who stressed the importance of “good penmanship.” She also immersed him in the subtle art of music appreciation that continues to be an ongoing passion and integral part of his creative process.

Retiring from nursing and moving to Minnesota, Ken’s interest in the visual arts was unquenchable. Ken worked as a cabinet maker and art supply salesman and perfected his skills as a Master Picture Framer over the last two decades. Ken’s own visual art career was destined for nothing more than refinement and personal exploration, including linoleum block mono prints, landscape painting and his current body of abstract expressionism.

SOLD OUT!

Ruthie Foster

Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 8 PM

Ruthie Foster is a four-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter who mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul. Described by Rolling Stone as “pure magic to watch and hear,” her vocal talent was elevated in worship services at her community church. Drawing influence from legendary acts like Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin, Foster developed a unique sound unable to be contained within a single genre. That uniqueness echoes a common theme in Ruthie’s life and career - marching to the beat of her own drum. Ruthie’s new album “Healing Time” is out November 18th.

Pure Prairie League

Saturday March 18, 2023 at 8 PM

Country rockers Pure Prairie League took their name from an obscure 19th century Temperance Union mentioned in the 1939 film, “Dodge City.” But this distinctly American band, with it’s 50 year career and long line of top hits, escaped obscurity long ago. Although fan favorites right out of the gate it took a number of years before PPL, formed by vocalist/guitar player Craig Fuller, had their first hit.

They couldn’t have picked a better way to start, and “AIMEE” not only put PPL on the map, but went onto become perhaps the most well-known and beloved country rock song of all time. Somewhere along the line Fuller left to replace Lowell George in Little Feat, but PPL continued to grow and prosper, with Mike Reilly as well as Country superstar Vince Gill, who was part of the band for a short time. Fuller eventually came back, and stayed for over a decade. Although Fuller is retired from full time touring, he sometimes joins the band for occasional shows. PPL continues to tour and treat their legions of loyal fans to music that sounds as good today as it did when it was first performed.
