Immaculata’s Social Justice 12 students competed in Kelowna’s Sustainable Development Challenge, creating solutions to some of the major challenges in our world, with a chance to win $5000 towards their project. Our teams did not win the first prize but won second and third place, raising a total of $3000 for their projects.
From the Ground Up (Flora Grenier, Tatum Newton and Jeremiah Lano) is working towards a green revamping of Ozanam House, a men’s recovery home supported by the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Their $5000 plan would be the beginning of a process to convert the house to a more renewable energy heating system to both save the environment and allow funding for Ozanam House to be used more effectively on programs for its residents instead of high energy bills.
Life Garden 2023 (Jessika Durose, Gabby Mercado and Reine Alaji) is helping Provision of Hope to create vegetable gardens in Liberia to create sustainable jobs and shift the diet of the people in the region from simple subsistence foods to healthy, home grown, whole foods. The project also includes an educational component, teaching students the importance of a healthy diet. Recently, the Liberian Minister of Health has reached out to the organization to partner with them and create more of these living gardens in hospitals throughout the country.
These teams are determined to see their projects through to completion and need our community to support them. If you are able to donate or spread awareness of their projects, please contact Mr. Richard at the school, or find the teams directly on Instagram.
