"When you become a teacher, you become a leader."
~Marva Tollefson

The Minnewaukan High School Introduction to Teaching class hosted their University of Jamestown (U of J) mentors for their second on-campus visit of the season on January 26th. The mentors are part of the U of J education program and are supporting our local students for college and career readiness as part of the Native Youth Community Project Grant from the US Department of Education.

During the January 26th experience, Spirit Lake community elder, Marva Tollefson (Lightening Comes in the House), spoke with the students about her long standing dream and recent pathway to becoming a Dakota Language teacher. She shared an inspirational message about setting goals and persevering through opposition and obstacles. According to Marva, "if your desire is to teach, you're going to teach! Don't quit on your dream." We're thankful for the amazing motivation, stories and humor Marva always brings to this project.

The Minnewaukan Introduction to Teaching course and U of J mentoring program is funded through the Native Youth Community Project (NYCP) Grant from the US Department of Education. The NYCP Grant is a collaborative project between Minnewaukan Public School, the NESC, U of J, Spirit Lake Tribe, and Devils Lake Public Schools.
