A Message from The Rev. Tina Rathbone

The day after watching the video of Tyre Nichols being chased, beaten, and grotesquely ignored by police in Memphis, I sort of fled to the Clark Museum in the hope of finding some solace in beauty. Then I was stopped in my tracks by the painting above. It is called, fittingly enough, ‘The Lamentation’ and the exact sameness of the position of Jesus’ bleeding body laying slumped against a friend, with the position of Tyre Nichols’ bleeding body, laying slumped against a car, undid me.

Same position. Same reality.

Last Sunday I tried to express, with words, the oneness of Jesus and Tyre in those moments – as well as the oneness of Jesus’ mother, Mary, with Tyre’s mother RowVaughn Wells. Sharing this painting with you all today is just another way of trying to do the same, this time through a picture.

May all who suffer as Christ himself suffered, and all who are killed as Christ himself was killed, feel their oneness with Him and the truth of His love for them – and may the rest of us grow more and more able to recognize it. Amen

Babies are placed in the Home when their mother has died and they cannot be cared for at home.

It costs about $1,500 to support a baby over the time needed for the child to grow old enough to return to their home. Many years ago we at Grace decided to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana

at the rate of $1,500 per year. Your donations help us reach that goal each year. You can bring money or checks to church on Sundays and place in the jar near the Welcome Table or send a check to:

Our theological reflection this week started with consideration of the story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11:1-9 and continued with the story of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4.

Betwixt Babel and Pentecost there is Google Translate.

God, you are the supreme communicator.

We are digital immigrants, illiterate by comparison.

We come together in awe and wonder at the immense diversity of spoken experience.

We pray to be spared from demonic inputs and firehose feeds.

TMI!

May we rest in your timeless Word.

AMEN

Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

Matthew 5:13-20

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

A Mighty Fortress

is our God

The Wartburg Choir: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, arr. W. B. Olds

"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" is one of the best-known hymns by the reformer, Martin Luther.

A mighty fortress is our God,

a bulwark never failing;

our helper He amid the flood

of mortal ills prevailing.

For still our ancient foe

doth seek to work us woe;

his craft and power are great,

and armed with cruel hate,

on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide,

our striving would be losing,

were not the Right Man on our side,

the Man of God's own choosing.

Dost ask who That may be?

Christ Jesus, it is He;

Lord Sabaoth, His name,

from age to age the same,

and He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled,

should threaten to undo us,

we will not fear, for God hath willed

His truth to triumph through us.

The Prince of Darkness grim,

we tremble not for him;

his rage we can endure,

for lo, his doom is sure;

one little word shall fell him.

That Word above all earthly powers,

no thanks to them, abideth;

the Spirit and the gifts are ours,

thru Him who with us sideth.

Let goods and kindred go,

this mortal life also;

the body they may kill;

God's truth abideth still;

His kingdom is forever.

WHAT ARE YOU

GRATEFUL FOR?

In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.

SHINE YOUR LIGHT

WELCOME

TO CHURCH SCHOOL!

A Note from Grace Church Sunday School

During our Sunday school lesson, we listened to the "Fishing for People" story from Matthew 4:18-23.

Jesus asks us to fish for people, spreading God's love to everyone. When we set out to be fishers of people, first, we need to equip ourselves with the Bible stories we learn. Next, we need to go out in the world to where people are to tell them about Jesus's Love for us ALL. Then, we try to be patient and not give up.

"It's exciting to catch a fish!"

"I agree, and It's exciting to share the love of God with you all and out in the world."

“(The world is) One big pond!”

Dear Jesus, help us become fishers of people. Help us tell others about God, who is Love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
