Vol 1 Issue 5

Art, Architecture &

the Spirit of Home (Part1)

We started ARABELLA with a mission to produce the most exquisite Canadian home design and fine art magazine edited for those with a passion for transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary and living life well. Without stating it succinctly at the time, we were indeed starting on our journey for the love of all things art. That journey has taken us to a global audience.

Over the years we have provided readers with stories on the best of art, residential architecture, landscaping, and interior design. These elements are all interwoven and extend from the traditional to the contemporary, from the local to the international. Combined, they create the spirit of home that inspires us in so many different ways.

In this issue, given its still winter, we start with a profile on artists who paint snow, one of the most appealing of genres. We then reflect on the spirit of home created in the art, architecture and design elements captured in historical contexts and life styles. It's one we live with in our current home. Enjoy!

I hope that you share my love of all things art and you consider joining and working with us in promoting and developing creative talents and businesses.

Artists Who Paint Snow

One of the most popular painting subjects in the world is snow. As we are immersed in the stuff and looking forward to spring, it seems appropriate that we should return to this article from Spring Awakenings 2012. Whether the inspiration comes from a streetscape with snowy walks, a crisp cold hike through the woods, little boys playing hockey or the ice formations of a glacier or iceberg, sleet, ice and white, white snow are among artists’ favourite themes.

An Art Auction Perspective

From the same issue, Lydia Abbott and Rob Cowley [Canada's Art Auctioneers] offer this auction sales perspective on Canadian Winter art.

ART, ARCHITECTURE, & SENSE OF HOME

For each issue of ARABELLA we've tried to keep a holistic sense of how our art, architecture and design preferences all combine to give us our unique sense of home. In this issue we focus on historical architectural styles and design, their restoration and the unique spirit of home they offer.

The Fascination of Historical Architecture

Working with Shannon Kyles we have had the opportunity to present narrative and pictorial profiles of many of the historical architecture styles that were prominent in North America for the past few centuries. Even as today, architectural styles reflected the evolving cultural, artistic, political and economic realties of the time. Along the way, they captured a timebound sense of beauty in its many forms that is still celebrated today, as is our own Maritime Gothic Revival home in Saint Andrews, NB. Some will go to extreme lengths to keep the spirit alive as Shannon demonstrates in her rescue and restoration project of the Regency Cottage.

Reviving the Spirit of Times Past

It takes a special passion and dedication, as well as significant economic resources to hold on to the beauty of period architecture. Architect Paul Roth and the interior and landscape design team played key roles in acting as coaches and muses to fulfil the family's vision and help realize the dream and spirit that's so worth coming home to.

Keeping A Canadian Legacy of Style Alive

For some communities, the legacy of the past is embedded in their very existence and becomes a drive for preservation. The historical Parkwood Estate of Sam McLaughlin, President of General Motors Canada in Oshawa, Ontario continues to offer insight into the style of his time. Today, the luxury and opulence of this last grand estate in Canada adds glamour to wedding dreams, community events and local, national and international tourism.
